The Democrats in the state senate will not have resolved the budget fiasco, the county will still be debating - wind or no wind, Obama will still be spending our money like a drunken' sailor.

How FDR tried, and failed, to change a national holiday.

Last I checked, Thanksgiving is still scheduled to take place tomorrow. The economic news may be gloomy, but unlike President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression, President Barack Obama has not tinkered with the date of the holiday.

In 1939, FDR decided to move Thanksgiving Day forward by a week. Rather than take place on its traditional date, the last Thursday of November, he decreed that the annual holiday would instead be celebrated a week earlier.

The reason was economic. There were five Thursdays in November that year, which meant that Thanksgiving would fall on the 30th. That left just 20 shopping days till Christmas. By moving the holiday up a week to Nov. 23, the president hoped to give the economy a lift by allowing shoppers more time to make their purchases and—so his theory went—spend more money.

Roosevelt made his decision in part on advice from Secretary of Commerce Harry Hopkins, who was in turn influenced by Lew Hahn, general manager of the Retail Dry Goods Association. Hahn had warned Hopkins that the late Thanksgiving, Nov. 30, might have an "adverse effect" on the sale of "holiday goods."

In an informal news conference in August announcing his decision, FDR offered a little tutorial on the history of the holiday. Thanksgiving was not a national holiday, he noted, meaning that it was not set by federal law. According to custom, it was up to the president to pick the date every year.

It was not until 1863, when Abraham Lincoln ordered Thanksgiving to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November, that that date became generally accepted, Roosevelt explained. To make sure that reporters got his point, he added that there was nothing sacred about the date.

Nothing sacred? Roosevelt might as well have commanded that roast beef henceforth would replace turkey as the star of the holiday meal, or that cranberries would be banned from the Thanksgiving table. The president badly misread public opinion. His announcement was front-page news the next day, and the public outcry was swift and loud.

First to complain was Plymouth, Mass., home of the Pilgrims and location of the first Thanksgiving in 1621. "Plymouth and Thanksgiving are almost synonymous," intoned the chairman of the town's board of selectmen, "and merchants or no merchants I can't see any reason for changing it."

College football coaches also objected. The United Press news service noted mildly that coaches would find the date change "a considerable headache." The Associated Press predicted that the Roosevelt plan would "kick up more clamor than a hot halfback running the wrong way." By 1939 Thanksgiving football had become a national tradition. Many colleges ended their football seasons with Thanksgiving Day games, a custom that dated back to the 19th century. In Democratic Arkansas, the football coach of Little Ouachita College threatened: "We'll vote the Republican ticket if he interferes with our football."

FDR's proclamation of the date of Thanksgiving had the force of law only in the District of Columbia and the territories of Hawaii and Alaska. A few states mandated that Thanksgiving be marked on the date set by the president, but in most states governors issued pro forma ratifications of the date the president proclaimed.
Now, however, the celebration became a political hot potato. Governors had to read public opinion, examine the local business climate, consider political loyalties, and decide which date to select as the official Thanksgiving.

Do they stick with tradition and celebrate Thanksgiving on Nov. 30, or follow FDR's lead and change the date to Nov. 23? It wasn't long before people started referring to Nov. 30 as the "Republican Thanksgiving" and Nov. 23 as the "Democratic Thanksgiving" or "Franksgiving."

Public sentiment ran heavily against Roosevelt's plan. Ten days after the president's announcement, Gallup published the results of a national poll finding that 62% of Americans surveyed disapproved of the date change. By the time November arrived, the 48 states were nearly evenly divided. Twenty-three decided to stick with the old Thanksgiving, and 22 decided to adopt FDR's date—Texas, Mississippi and Colorado said they would celebrate on both days.

For the next two years, Roosevelt continued to move up the date of Thanksgiving, and more states resigned themselves to celebrating early. By 1941, however, the facts turned against Roosevelt.

By then, retailers had two years of experience with the early Thanksgiving, and data were available regarding the 1939 and 1940 Christmas shopping seasons. In mid-March 1941, The Wall Street Journal reported the results of a survey done in New York City. The Journal's headline put it succinctly: "Early Thanksgiving Not Worth Extra Turkey or Doll." Only 37% of stores surveyed favored the early date. In Washington, the federal government reported that the early Thanksgiving resulted in no boost to retail sales.

And so, on May 20, 1941, FDR called a press conference at the White House and announced that he was changing Thanksgiving Day back to its traditional date. The early Thanksgiving had been an "experiment," he said, and the experiment failed. It was too late to move the 1941 Thanksgiving back to the traditional date, but in 1942 Thanksgiving would revert to the last Thursday of the month. This was "the first time any New Deal experiment was voluntarily abandoned," a Washington Post columnist wrote.

Thankfully, there is a happy ending to this tale of Washington folly: On Dec. 26, 1941, Roosevelt signed a joint resolution passed by Congress making Thanksgiving a national holiday and mandating that it be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.

Giuliani Out, But Still In

Rudy Giuliani is out of the race for Governor but in the hunt for the US Senate seat. Oddly enough that pits two rivals for the GOP nod - Giuliani against Pataki (take II).

In polling he leads Gillibrand by a 14 point margin - 54% to 40% and if he is to come up against Pataki, well he would crush him nearly 3 to 1 with 71% support to Pataki 24%.

Hoffman is "un-conceding the race for NY-23 (here), which means all is in play until the election results are certified. Ho Hum - big deal, that is the case anyway whether he conceded or not, while statistically possible it is highly improbable the results will change. This is nothing more than a publicity stunt and an opportunity to keep a Hoffman candidacy for a 2010 race in the public's view and it also keeps Owens' vote for the Pelosi health care plan in the public arena for debate and puts him on notice that his every move is under even more scrutiny than usual.

It is time for Hoffman and Scozzafava both to move on and get over it, the race is over and enough post mortem already.

State
Are the Senate Democrats miscalculating the state deficit issue? Governor Paterson is attempting to address the state deficit with a real plan while he continues to look like a lame duck Governor. It is clear his days in office are numbered, he is having to spend money now on an advertising campaign just to raise his favorable ratings a meager percent or two and maintain any resemblance of being a viable candidate.

But, the Senate Democrats appear to be ignoring him and viewing him as a liability in this crisis, which could be a serious miscalculation on their part. They could and are likely to be viewed as do nothing Democrats and the media is already rolling out story after story on their lack of action and lack of any plan to address the deficit.

The Senate Democrats should not make this a referendum on the Governor's popularity, they need to do their own job or they will spoon feed their opponents an issue and pay the price with the electorate in the next election cycle.

The source close to the situation says, she will remain a Republican.

For months Owens was saying things like this;

"I want to be able to analyze the information and the bill and come to a conclusion," or I'll have to read more on it or I'll have to review it further

But he has become a quick study since Tuesday;

Owens said. "There are still changes I would like to make, includingraising the payroll exemption for small businesses, but like I saidlast week, there is a fundamental need for reform and we must act witha sense of urgency.

Along with his quick study of the issues since Tuesday, he voted down an amendment that would have blocked federal funding for abortions. The health care legislation he voted for will grow government in the neighborhood of $3 trillion dollars - 1.2 trillion is funded through new revenues and 1.8 trillion in debt.

The bill will reduce Doctors pay under the Medicare formula effecting Senior citizen's care. Suspected but not yet known is whether or not it will broaden the eligibility for people to receive Medicaid, which in turn will have a significant impact on local property taxes.

You might recall Mike Bragman from Syracuse attempted a coup on Shelly Silver but Bragman came up short, His future in politics was defined by that moment, he ended up going from a high profile leadership position with a nice office to below rank and file member level and working out of a broom closet before he eventually departed for good.

What is Dede Scozzafava fate as Leader Pro Tempore? The minority leader of the Republican conference in the Assembly, Brian Kolb, said she is not in danger of being kicked out of the conference, but did not offer the same guarantee for her leadership position in this article.

And if Kolb is wondering whether or not the locals support a decision to take action, read what Jefferson GOP chieftain Don Coon has to say in the article:

“I campaigned for her. I played the loyal soldier and held my nose as Iworked for her and then what does she do?” said Jefferson CountyRepublican Party Chairman Donald Coon. “She doesn’t care about the GOP.She doesn’t care about the people who worked for her. She just caresabout herself.”

“They’ll remove her from her position and she’ll cry that they pickedon poor little Dede and go switch parties and claim it’s all ourfault,” said Coon. “She made a decision on Sunday, and now she’s goingto have to live with the consequences of that.”

GOP Active Tuesday Night

The demise of the Republican party is greatly exaggerated, lets take a look around the state at their performance Tuesday night. If they move back to a position of fiscal responsibility they have the opportunity to keep gaining.

* Voters all across New York voted for lower taxes and Republican leadership Tuesday, and the results show New Yorkers believe that the Republican Party will do more to protect their wallets and pocketbooks, and improve the quality of life for middle-class families.

* Suburban Republicans swept to victory yesterday, highlighted by newcomer Rob Astorino’s stunning victory against three-term incumbent County Executive Andy Spano. Rob Astorino’s call for lower taxes and shrinking the size of government resonated with suburban voters who are seeking real change.

* Republican challenger Ed Mangano has run a neck and neck race with high-profile Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, and the race will now be decided by absentee ballots. Nassau County Democrat Comptroller Howard Weitzman has been defeated and Republicans have retaken the Nassau County Legislature and could still pick up an additional seat.

*Republicans gained a county wide seat in Jefferson County at the county clerk's office.

* Republicans have also seized control of the County Legislatures in Ulster and Dutchess counties, where Republicans went from being in the minority to holding a supermajority after Election Day.

* Republicans strengthened their majorities in Onondaga County, and maintained control of legislatures in Rensselaer and Saratoga counties, where Saratoga Springs Mayor Scott Johnson won a landslide reelection victory.

* Republicans maintained the majority in Lewis and Jefferson County Legislatures.

* Republicans continued their control of the Oneida and Monroe County Legislatures, and Republican challengers unseated Democrat town supervisors in the Monroe County towns of Irondequoit and Mendon.

* Republicans shrank the Democrat majority on the Erie County Legislature, where three Republican challengers backed by Erie County Executive Chris Collins defeated three Democrat incumbents.

* Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef easily won a fifth term Tuesday, as voters gave an emphatic thumbs up to his responsible Republican leadership in an overwhelmingly Democrat county.

* Republicans grabbed three key New York City Council seats in Queens, where Dan Halloran Peter Koo and Eric Ulrich, won impressive victories.

* Nationally, voters in Virginia and New Jersey, where residents traded in Democrat Governors for Republicans, sent a clear message they want checks and balances on the Obama administration and the Democrats in Congress.

Is this is any consolation, Hoffman did win Jefferson County. It was originally reported that Owens won the county, but once a recount occurred it was found that Hoffman in fact won the county, albeit by a small margin.

Victim?

Dede perpetuates her campaign and poor performance in the 23rd Congressional district race by going on the offense and playing the victim card. (If she would have only done that during her lackluster debacle of a campaign) See WWNY story (here).

More to the point though, Dede is not a victim. This was a high profile race and unless no one paid attention, including her, to the previous state senate races or the 20th Congressional race or NJ Governor's race then you might have expected something different. If Dede thought this was going to be some sort of low profile quilt show where everyone gazes at someone's fine craft, than she should have stayed home on her couch knitting.

This was a multimillion dollar race and here is a news flash Dede - they get ugly, you may call that the unfortunate part of politics, but nonetheless, it is reality.

Here is another news flash for Dede - and any other candidate expecting financial assistance in their campaign for outside organizations - money follows performance. Read how this cycle work; you do well in the polls, they invest in you, you continue to perform in the polls and they continue to invest in you.

Conversely what happens when the voters start to reject you and your message? Com'on you know the answer - that is right, your funding goes away. So Dede can complain all she wants about RCCC not investing money in her at the end and where RCCC money went after she quit the race and she can attempt to use that as a some futile reason for why she endorsed her opponent, but it all came down to the fact that she was being rejected by the voters in the polls.

When she QUIT her campaign she technically remained a candidate, she should have stayed away from the remaining food fight.

Here is the next victim card she will lay at the public's feet. She should be removed from her leadership position in the Assembly, where she leads the debate against Democrats on issues. Especially after Silver throwing the welcome mat to her. How can she possibly be effective in her role?

Now for those who are criticizing the selection of Dede, here is something to think about.

The special election did not allow for a primary.
The Republican leadership opened the process up to as many people as possible with the regional meetings.
Consider the ongoing narrative if Dede is not the candidate - again she would be playing the victim card, "they overlooked me again," "I'm being courted by the Democrats," yada yada yada.
The end result of picking her and not picking her ended up the same. Although the voters rejected her not the party leadership this time.

Loyalty is everything - Dede even professed that during the regional meetings; how she has been there for everyone, yet she did not follow through. She should not be playing the woe is me victim card now - that message is ineffective, just like her campaign.

So we can expect the Dems to tout their capture ofa seat that had been in the hands of the Republicans for over a centuryas a rejoinder to those who will say this election is a harbinger of aGOP revival in 2010.

The main talking Democratic point about this race, both before andafter the voting, was that the collapse of the campaign of the liberalRepublican who had been tapped by the state party to try and hold theseat was due to the intolerance of a radical-Right fringe bent onpurging the party of any but the most rabid conservatives. In this wayDede Scozzafava, the Republican candidate who dropped out of the raceover the weekend and then endorsed Democrat Bill Owens, was elevatedfrom an inept candidate whose positions were largely indistinguishablefrom that of the Democrats and who was heading for inevitable defeat,to a martyr for the lost cause of liberal Republicanism. The narrativeportrays the Republican grassroots, aided and abetted by nationalconservative personalities such as Sarah Palin and Dick Armey, asbullies who can’t abide the presence of a pro-choice woman in theirranks and would rather lose an election with a conservative than winwith a “moderate."

The loss of this seat ought to cast a shadow on what was otherwise abig night for Republicans. But the villains here aren’t the tea-partyrabble-rousers who sunk Scozzafava, but a local and state Republicanleadership that imposed an incompetent candidate on a Republicanelectorate eager for leaders who could offer an alternative to theDemocrats, not someone who would be a halfhearted supporter of Obama’sagenda. The victory of Chris Christie in New Jersey illustrates thatthere is room in the GOP for Blue State candidates who wouldn’t passthe muster of the conservative rank and file in more conservativestates. But the decision to foist Scozzafava on Upstate New YorkRepublicans was a cynical ploy that was always destined to fail even ifa credible Conservative-party alternative hadn’t emerged. It is onething to seek to open up parties to candidates who are not ideologicalpurists. It is quite another to nominate a person whose positions puther on the side of the Democrats on virtually every major issue thatRepublicans care about. Scozzafava’s candidacy may have seemed like agood idea to GOP big shots, but since she refused to take up any issuesthat might have rallied the Republican faithful to her side and lackedthe ability to appeal to the dissatisfied independent voters thatdeserted the Democrats elsewhere this fall, what possible chance didshe ever have of winning?

The lesson here is not the danger that the right poses to the futureof the Republicans but rather that a party leadership that isinsensible to the interests of its voters is doomed to defeat. Had theRepublicans chosen a candidate who could have counted on the support ofthe party’s base to start with, the seat could have been held despitethe changing demographics in the district. It was Scozzafava’s dismalcampaign that lost the seat, not the fact that it was impossible toconvince most Republicans that they had no reason to support her.

Our new Congressman is Bill Owens who won he hotly contest race that was close until Mr. Hoffman conceded just before midnight.

Bill Owens stayed on message throughout the campaign while the other banged each other around, so much so that the first blood was an unprecedented move of having a candidate, Dede Scozzafava, quit the campaign 72 hours before it's conclusion.

When Scozzafava quit the race she threw her support behind Bill Owens and that could be possibly be the difference in the outcome. The polls showed Hoffman leading but given the turmoil anything was possible.

This was a special election, therefore Mr. Owens is eligible to be sworn in immediately as opposed to January 1, 2010. So, while Mr. Owens assumes his responsbilities as a Member of the House of Representatives and the Republicans are looking at the next election.

Owens wins 49% at last count while Hoffman and Scozzafava combined for 51%, which signals immediate vulnerability. It is anyones call though.

I will add that Dede throughout the campaign said "this is not about me" (her), but time will be the judge of that when the truth is known on your sell out. Dear Dede,

When you quit the race yesterday for the 23rdCongressional district...I cried. As someone who has been through along, bloody, and difficult campaign, I know and understand theemotional, physical, and mental stress it puts one through. I know whatit is like to have your integrity attacked, or in my case my husband's,when you know the attacks are false and made up of lies. I "get" thestress, the exhaustion, and the inner workings of a campaign thatsometimes you feel you have no control or say. In every campaign thereare issues and problems, and as I have had my fill of "Monday morningarmchair quarterbacks," from people who have never undertaken acampaign, I never planned on saying one negative thing about yours. Ihad even planned on writing you a nice note on integrity...I had evenconsidered pulling the lever for you on Tuesday regardless...but then...

...I read you were endorsing the Democrat. To me...that was a slap inmy face! A slap for everything your local volunteers and I have triedto do for you. Yes, maybe the national party did not help you out asmuch as you would like, perhaps you are mad, bitter even...but whatabout all of us locals who did everything we could do to see yousucceed. The crowd was large and the excited - there was clear evidence that this is a grass roots campaign. The official attendance count provided by the fire department was 450, that outnumbered the attendance at the Biden event by some 120 people.

The description of the two events is that the crowd at the fairgrounds tonight was 4 times more excited than the early days event.

Is Dede planning on switching parties to become a Democrat where she appears more comfortable in her positions with issues such as card check, bailouts and stimulus funding?

Or is she committing political suicide on her own? After all many GOP supporters despite their discomfort with her left of center positions on card check, etc. stuck with her and now she slaps them in the face.

The end result would have been the same whether or not she was selected as the candidate. She knew people had difficulties with some of her positions; had they not selected her it would have been "they are kicking Dede to the curb yet again." But they selected her despite her positions and the electorate kicked her to the curb and she lashes back at the GOP and appears to be on a path to switch parties.

How does she expect the Republicans to react? At the very least the Assembly Republicans have an obligation to remove Dede from her leadership post sooner rather than later, which will provide the necessary excuse for Scozzafava to quit the Republicans (like she quit the race) and change her party registration.

Dede's statement on the day she quit the race -

I am and have always been a proud Republican. It is my hope that withmy actions today, my party will emerge stronger and our district andour nation can take an important step towards restoring the enduringstrength and economic prosperity that has defined us for generations.

She spoke of integrity, principles and people's word during the campaign and attacked another opponent for going back on their word. Two days after an unprecedented move by Dede Scozzafava to quit an election during the campaign the race is now focused on the remaining two candidates, Doug Hoffman and Bill Owens, who decided they would finish the job they started.

Hoffman is at 51% to 34% for Bill Owens and 13% for Dede Scozzafava in the poll
conducted over the weekend. In a two way contest against Owens, Hoffman holds a 54-
38 advantage.

Independents have swung by large numbers toward Hoffman 52-30, which is not surprising because this is the same swing the Great O is seeing in his polls number. O is losing independents by the bus load.

Dede Scozzafava had a 52% unfavorable rating in the district. She likely has higher unfavorable ratings among Republicans given her recent actions.

What Is Dede's Future

The campaign was a mangled mess and it continues down the same road in the aftermath of her quitting.

Yesterday she departed the race in the best interest of the party - her words not mind - and today she continues the dive. She has clearly reached the anger stage and does not know how to manage it.

What is her future?

It is hard to believe she will remain a Republican and if she does make a move to the Democrats how does she reconcile - "I am a Republican, always have been and always will be a Republican" statement from the Hotline? She was critical of an opponent for not keeping his word.

Is she does remain a Republican it is hard to believe that she will escape next year's election cycle without a primary.

Dede's Parting Gift

Was Dede forced out of the race from someone above?

Likely not, the decision was most likely a result of the true blood and guts of politics.

You often hear politics is a blood sport or a contact sport, well that along with the fact it is a very expensive sport, especially if you are 15 points down heading into the final stretch. The decision by Dede to quit this race is a result of all of these factors; she was short on cash and was ravaged by her opponents - both Owens and Hoffman and lagging in the polls.

If this decision came from on high, then there would have been a negotiated deal for her to endorse Doug Hoffman within 12 to 24 hours. She has not endorsed Doug Hoffman and the WDT even reports the contrary. This is after a campaign worker appeared to the people shortly after Dede quit and encouraged people to make phone calls and go door to door to assist ... whom ... well, the staffer even had a difficult time answering this until he said for the Republicans to beat the Democrat.

This was just another typical misstep of the campaign that was poorly organized, poorly managed and poorly executed. Candidate and campaign staff never appeared to be on the same page, even after she quits the race - her support heads one way and her staff heads another.

Is this an indication that Dede may switch parties? She was accused of that during this campaign and she fervently denied it, even saying on the Hotline "I am a Republican, I have always been a Republican and will always be a Republican."

But, Dede quits this race and leaves the GOP a departing gift from her campaign.

UPDATE: Daily News reports (here) her preference to support Owens was for card check - that would also be the issue that is arguably her greatest downfall in the campaign that branded her a liberal. One person after another said they were not one or two issue (abortion and same sex marriage) voters, yet they identified card check as an issue that solidified in their minds that she was too left of center for them to support her. She is ratifying their thoughts.

Update: Dede releases supporters and county chairs to support who they choose!

GOP Candidate for the 23rd Congressional was scheduled to hold a rally at 10 am this morning, but instead she is reportedly going to release her supporters

She cannot officially step out of the race, but it is being said that she will "release her supporters" and it is expected county GOP chairs will encourage people to support Hoffman.

There is a scheduled conference call among the 11 county GOP chairs today and the Hoffman campaign is expected to make a reach out to the chairs to seek their support.

It was an emotional departure for Scozzafava as she thanked her supporters for their hard work and her message was basic - life goes on! Supporters, many who were expecting a rally, were left wondering what just happened.

In a bizarre move after Scozzafava's departure from the room a campaign staffer asked supporters to go door to door and make phones and bewilderment fell on the room. When the campaign worker was asked for whom; the room went silent! It was a move that characterized this campaign.

The real question is how calculating a move this is?

The answer to that question lies in the cross tabs of polling data. What did her base of voters look like, GOP, independents, some Democrats, what issues gravitated them toward her campaign, and where they will go from here? Who will win and will the victory be a result of this decision?

Siena Poll due to be released this morning will report a mirror image of the results from a poll earlier this week that showed Hoffman and Owens statistically tied and Scozzafava in third place.

Mayor Graham and The Independence Party folks recalibrate their commitment and abandoned the Scozzafava ship as this point as well. The word spread around town quickly that Mayor Graham was sporting a Hoffman sign.

In an independent poll has Hoffman in a dead heat with Owens.

House Republicans are welcoming Hoffman with open arms to caucus with them.

Democrats can't figure out who to attack, which is actually quite funny, but currently they are going after Hoffman like he is the front runner.

Big finish for Hoffman coming to Watertown or is that Rich or is it Big and Rich...anyway it is a major rally.

RNC Chair Michael Steele is taking a hands off approach to the GOP candidate.

Former Governor George Pataki has reportedly endorsed Hoffman tonight at a Conservative Party function.

First I must say that I am a local committee member of the Republican Party and a volunteer coordinator for Assemblywomen Scozzafava. The selection of Assemblywomen Scozzafava was one of the most fair and open processes ever. The 11 county chairs allowed anyone interested in interviewing a chance to speak to all committee members in a series of interviews across this huge district. Mr. Hoffman was one of nine people who attended the interviews seeking our support. After the interview process the county chairs met to select a candidate. In Jefferson County we allow our 160 or so committee members to vote for who our chairwomen would support. At these interviews Mr. Hoffman made it very clear he felt all candidates were very well qualified and if he wasn’t selected he would support and help our candidate. In an email just two days after we made our selection Mr. Hoffman congratulated Assemblywomen Scozzafava and offered his help. Mr. Hoffman says he is a member of Glenn Beck 9.12 Project which includes principles like Honesty and sincerity, but his actions speak volumes to his commitment.

Conservative Party Chairmen Mike Long made his dissatisfaction very well known to us and his interest to run a third candidate. If he wanted to run a Conservative Republican he could have talked with Paul Maroun a Conservative Republican who in my opinion and many others was one of our top 3 candidates. Unfortunately Mr. Hoffman was ninth in my opinion and many others who participated in the interviews. Instead he has chosen Mr. Hoffman, who doesn’t even live in 23rd Congressional District and couldn’t even vote for himself in the November 3rd election.

On many radio shows and 30 second commercial you are provided with some misinformation or limited information on a many things. Assemblywomen Scozzafava is NOT the Working Family candidate or ACORN endorsed. Mr. Owens has the WFP line in the November 3rd election. She sponsored legislation to remove ACORN funding from the New York State budget. In her 11 years in the NYS Assembly she has voted with the Republican Conference 95% of the time. She ranks 5th out of the republicans in Albany for voting along the party line. She would NOT support the health care package as it is proposed, she is supportive of Tort reform, she favors opening state line for competitive insurance and she would oppose the Cap and Trade. On immigration reform she also stands against amnesty and for better regulations. She believes in less government spending and less taxes. She voted NO on the 2009 New York State budget which had the largest increase in spending, taxes and fees in state history. Mr. Hoffman claims this was done to help her run for Congress but this vote was well before anyone knew of Congressmen John McHugh’s appointment. Dede also received the endorsement of the National Rifle Association.

I have known Assemblywomen Scozzafava for the 11 years I have served as village trustee and now as Mayor. Not once have I considered Assemblywomen Scozzafava a career politician. She has spent countless hours fight for our residents of Northern New York, first as Mayor of Gouverneur, and as New York State Assemblywomen. As New York State Assemblywomen she has provide our residents with exceptional services. She has always been there to assist the Village of West Carthage with any issues at the state or local level. I question the amount and quality of services our residents and local communities will receive if either of the others were elected. They don’t even feel it is necessary to debate or answer questions on local issues before we vote.

Assemblywomen Scozzafava has worked very hard to bring money back to the North Country for projects that have improved healthcare, brought new business opportunities and created jobs. Mr. Hoffman’s pledge not to accept earmark money worries me. Assemblywomen Scozzafava has made it very clear that there needs to be reform in the system and how money is disturbed. Until changes are made I want a representative that will bring money back to the district for project that make improvements to the community. Many projects would not happen without this type of assistance. The Carthage Area Hospital has had three major projects in the last 5 years that all received earmarked money from Congressman McHugh. These projects improved healthcare to our residents, created and protected jobs, redeveloped an abandon grocery store that was the gateway to our village and is now rebuilding the downtown that was lost to a devastating fire. Hospital Administer Walter Becker would make it very clear none of this would have been possible with earmarked money. Until there is reform we need someone fighting for our district, they are going to earmark the money to someone else if Mr. Hoffman won’t accept it.

So I ask you on November 3rd vote for issues that matter to the North Country, issues that affect us close to home and not allow outside PACs and politicians with there own agenda influence our election. Please vote for Dede Scozzafava on November 3rd.

Not All Polls Are Polls

The Hoffman people are touting a couple of polls that show their pol in the lead. The Shepard Palin has spoken and it is time for her flock, who cannot think on their own, to follow along! All the planets are aligned and our savior has arrived!

Wait one minute, before you buy into all the information, read some interesting points about the polls from TMV.

The Club for Growth endorsed Hoffman and just last week threw $300,000 into the race on his behalf.

The sample size is tiny (300 people).

The pollster that Club for Growth is using, Basswood Research — I’msure does perfectly good work for its clients — but is not that wellknown** and is therefore not taking too much reputational risk withthis poll. (** I’m told that Basswood does in fact do a decent amountof work for Republican candidates like Tom Coburn and Mark Sanford.)

The number of undecideds in the poll — 22 percent — is unusual for apoll just eight days out from an election and is higher than what the public polls show.

The poll was conducted entirely over the weekend. Although Sunday is a fairly good polling day, Saturdays are not.

The narrative that Club for Growth constructs around the poll is thatHoffman is taking votes from Scozzafava, but the poll also shows theDemocrat Owens polling quite a bit lower than he does in the publicpolls. It seems unlikely that Owens voters are defecting to Hoffman.Rather, if Scozzafava’s support is indeed collapsing, I’d expect Owensto be picking up some of that support in addition to Hoffman.

The poll was released at a time when the NRCC, which has endorsed Scozzafava, is defending its position by citing the polling evidence, and so the incentive to put out some contrary evidence to alter the inflection of the media narrative is quite high.

The poll shows that 59 percent of so-called likely voters have noopinion (or haven’t heard of) Owens, 48 percent have no opinion ofScozzafava, and 56 percent have no opinion of Hoffman.

Only 14 percent of the likely voters in this poll are age 40 orunder, as compared with about 40 percent in the Research 2000 poll.

Previous polls put out by Basswood Research and the Club for Growth in this race featured highly leading question wording, although that does not appear to be the case here.

Do I really care if this election redirects the national debate on the direction one political party or another?

Do I really care if this is a fight for the heart and soul of the Republican party?

Do I really care if this is a fight for the Blue Dog Democratic Party movement?

What I do care about is some of the hard line approaches taken by candidates.

For example - earmarks - it is guaranteed I do not support the current system, but until reform happens then I want my member of congress to get our fair share. Same situation with the state level member items and the leaders exclusive control of the money; the system and process is broken and needs reforming. Reform does not equal refusal.

What I do care about is Fort Drum.

What I do care about are affordable housing options in our community that depend upon a working relationships with agencies such as HUD.

What I do care about are various water and sewer system upgrades in various towns and villages that require some federal funding to maintain or upgrade.

Did I mention jobs? Ah yes, Fort Drum, jobs that depend upon people from the base getting services and products such as; oil changes, electronics, vehicles or home furnishings. Construction workers that are supported by the work in and around our area.

I do care about health care and that it is delivered to people who need it (absent of total government take over) and the quality of the facilities in our region that depend upon our member of congress.

I do care about education and even more so in a tough economy when people utilize it more while unemployed.

Yes, Mr. Armey, I do care about the "parochial" issues, isn't funny how that works? And yes I do not care about your petty political party squabbling that you want to make this race about!

Dick, Rick, Steve, Sarah, Michelle and anyone else who wants to intrude in our 23rd Congressional race for your own selfish reasons - STAY HOME, we are bright intelligent people who can decide what is best for ourselves.

Hoffman wagon coming unhitched?

It appears when you get down to the issues and beyond the rhetoric that may be the case.

This kind of says it all.

The problem with this easy cruise is Hoffman. He's not particularlynimble, in terms of his presentation, and it's not apparent that he hasa particularly good grasp of the issues. I found this when we spoke about health care, and Jude Seymour seemed struck by some of Hoffman's non-answers before the editorial board of the Watertown Daily Times.

But the real story of the race is another poll that shows Hoffman down 12 points, a gap that can only be closed in the final days of this race with a Hail Mary pass! You are not likely to win a race when you are down 12 points with a little over a week to go.

Let's take a look at some basic fundamentals of running a campaign and grade whether or not the Scozzafava campaign folks have passed or failed.

a. Raised campaign funds to run a successful campaign. Grade F

b. Use marketing effectively to define your candidate, never let your opponent define the candidate. Grade F

c. Campaign workers never become the news story. Grade F

d. Create a message and stay on it, do not let your opposition knock you off message. Grade F

e. Use earned media through press conference, press releases and events to highlight issues important to residents of the 23rd district. Grade F

f. Assess situations such as press conference and events for the upsides and downsides. Grade F

g. Be ready to address your weaknesses, stick to your strengths and attack your opponents weakness. Grade F

h. Never, Never take on the media, especially the opposing media, in this case the dean of the conservatives William Kristol. Grade F

Have they done anything right? Not sure yet, there is a little less than two weeks to go, they still have time to get something right.

The situation, mood and atmosphere for this campaign was right; the country and for the most part this district was leery of being pushed to the left too far too fast. People are a bit apprehensive of the agenda in the country, this race should have been much different than the 20th Congressional race. It is, welcome 23rd CD to the conservative movement.

Novice campaign people should have been able to run this race and win it.

23rd Congressional District - Issues? Not A Chance

This is one New York Democrat Senator who will be watching the internal proceedings against his colleague Hiram Monserrate.

Senator Kevin Parker is likely to face the same fate as Monserrate if he is also convicted on assault charges. He was arrested on felony assault from his alleged attack on a New York Post photographer.

Parker is almost guaranteed to be a no vote for removing Monserrate. It would set a precedent that if he was also to be convicted of even a lesser misdemeanor same as Monserrate then his removal would be imminent.

My dear friend at JLL (who is an excellent blogger and good person, despite our differing opinions) crows today in PIV comments about the Democrats beating up on a strong Republican party. The first thing the Democrats in the state senate ought to be doing is cleaning their own house.

The Scozzafava campaign has not exactly been a text book stellar campaign.

The candidate has been underfunded from the get go and this blog has consistently preached about getting earned media, getting the candidate into print newsrooms, in TV studios and getting a presence on the internet talking about the issues.

The Owens campaign served up red meat on a platter - "Invisi-Bill" - they loaded the campaign gun and all the Scozzafava campaign had to do was fire away.

But, the publicity the Scozzafava campaign received yesterday is NOT the earned media they needed; it is the last thing a campaign needs - campaign workers becoming distractions.

Scozzafava had enough to worry about with Hoffman and his minions on the attack 24/7, lacking any credible campaign of their own to run, except that "I am not Dede." Now, the Scozzafava campaign has ignited the far right media that has heretofore been somewhat passively (except RedState) following the campaign.

As if Scozzafava's campaign did not have enough to worry about, now they have:

The Wall Street Journal
The National Review
and Fox News.

This is the headache the candidate did not need heading into the final weeks. In the wake of yesterday's events these media outlets will become more persistent.

Piling Up

The opposition against Hiram Monserrate is piling up. The Democratic New York Senator was convicted last week of a misdemeanor for assaulting his girlfriend and he is finding out quickly how fast his friends of the Democratic majority will dump him.

Monserrate, who was also part of the coup early this summer that deadlocked the New York State Senate is a former New York City police officer. He was welcomed by both sides during the struggle for control of the Senate at the same time he had been arrested but not yet convicted.

Several Democrats have issued cookie cutter press releases seeking to slip the noose now known as Hiram Monserrate, but he is refusing to budge and has at least one ally in Senator Ruben Diaz.

Friday’s Wall Street Journal reportson how Tea-Party conservatives are successfully trying to damage amoderate Republican’s shot at a vacant Congressional seat in UpstateNew York that has long been a Republican seat. The Republican inquestion is Dede Scozzafava,a Republican State Assemblywoman who is running to suceed John McHugh,a Republican congressman that was tapped by President Obama to beSecretary to the Army.
Tea-Party conservatives along with other hard right activists havebeen trying hard to sink Scozzafava’s candidacy because of her sociallyliberal views on abortion and gay marriage. They have tried to painther as a tax and spend liberal. Hmm…maybe she doesn’t support the death penalty, but she does seem to be tough on crime. What about guns?

No namby-pamby liberal there. Oneshould add that Ms Scozzafava recieved a grade of “A” by the NRAPolitical Victory Fund in 2008 and an “F” from New Yorkers Against GunViolence in the same year.

If that’s not enough, the liberal-leaning Albany Project blog also did some digging around and found out the shocking truth: Scozzafava is a conservative. They state:

The conclusion I draw from looking over numerous piecesof legislation is that Scozzafava on most issues is nothing more thanyour average Assembly Republican. Most of the votes that she didsupport the Democratic (or progressive) positions came when the wholeAssembly voted unanimously for a bill. Scozzafava’s conservativepositions are not reflected in the mainstream media, where she islabeled a “liberal” because of her stances on two social issues that,while important, should never define any candidate and should never bethe sole indicator of a candidate’s ideology.
I see Scozzafava as someone who is far from the Glenn Becks of theworld. But that doesn’t mean she is not conservative. The modern-dayconservative is a different breed, but a lot of what Scozzafava standsfor resembles an old school conservative. At best, she’s a moderatewith conservative leanings. At worst, she’s a conservative Republicanwhose liberal stances on two social issues have given her an inaccuratelabel.

As I said in a recent post,what bothers many conservatives who are against Scozzafava is herstance on two social issues. Because of this she is tarred a “liberal”even though the rest of her record is pretty conservative.
If Scozzafava were to make it to Congress, my guess is she wouldstand with her party 80 percent of the time. Ronald Reagan hadsomething to say about having someone as their 80 percent friend andnot their 20 percent enemy. It’s too bad his supposed heirs have missedthe message.

On His Watch Or Not

Paterson made a bold move today paring down spending by $5 billion dollar as a start to close this year's gap and begin on next year's deficit.

Here is what he had to say:

"Not on my watch will I allow this state to go into default," Patersondeclared. "Not on my watch will I let us fritter around and makereckless decisions at a time when the citizens of this state needleadership, leadership that looks at the big picture despite thedistractions of politics and special interests...and the 24-hour newscycle."

But what he wants on his watch, other declare - not so fast!

Democrats in the Senate lead by Finance Chair Carl Kruger are not ready to stop spending. Kruger calls Paterson's plan a "doomsday atmosphere," (hmmm sounds familiar) and cautioned his fellow Democrats about going along with Paterson. Kruger even went as far as saying Paterson can't do his own job.

"We will not treat this as if it’s a mass hysterical fire drill," thesenator said. "And I'm not going to allow him to use us as his punchingbag. So if he wants to up his poll numbers and run for re-election, hewon't be running against the Legislature."

It is tough to get leadership these days that understand spending within their means.

Siena Research Institute polling for the 23rd Congressional District to be released this morning will show Dede Scozzafava down by 4 points. That represents an 11 point swing from a recent poll that showed her 7 points up.

Frankly, as much as she is being attacked it is no wonder she is not down double digits.

Dede needs to fight back!

By a margin of 29-12, those who've seen a Scozzafava commercial say thespots make them less likely to support her, while a small plurality ofthose who have seen an Owens ad say it made them more likely to pullthe lever for him.

If you ran a company would you hire a person if you never interviewed them?

The answer should emphatically be NO!

The same should be true for the any candidate in the 23rd Congressional District. Democrat ~~Independent~~ Bill Owens who is willing to change his spots just to get elected is hiding behind slick commercials, Conservative ~~Republican~~ Doug Hoffman is hiding behind attack ads aimed at Dede Scozzafava. Neither candidate has run a campaign of substance.

To this point, neither have made themselves available to the public for a forum of questions and answers. In fact neither of the two have even made themselves available to the media. The media folks openly admit Owens and Hoffman are denying them any access other than a prepared statement.

A person who was in attendance at the Cape Vincent grip and grin on Sunday for Bill Owens came away with the impression that Mr. Owens is quite confident about victory and gives off the impression he does not need nor care about Jefferson County in order to win. Would you elect someone from three hours away that you never met and has this kind of attitude? In a community where Fort Drum equals boom or bust; the answer to that question should emphatically be NO!

Mr. Owens has never faced an issue that he would prefer to address, time after time he deflects an issue and does not take a position and repeatedly admits to not being informed. Such as today: "I feel very strongly about the fact that people should not makespeculative pronouncements about issues that they are not fullyinformed about" if he is not informed of the issues then why should he be elected.

Doug Hoffman, who does not even live in the 23rd Congressional district, is baseless in his campaign. He is really not a contender to win, but attempting to be nothing but a spoiler. Here is a quote from Hoffman that proves the that point. "There's only 20 days left . . . but we have her on the run" Are the people of North Country prepared to fall for this bull-hit, are they willing to throw an election for this crap?

Dede Scozzafava is the only person known to the constituents in the North Country, you know her record, which is being distorted by her opponents. You have probably in several cases had the opportunity to speak with her in person.

According to media sources she is the only candidate making herself available to them, although one could argue she needs to do more. Dede should be holding public forums on her own, whether the other two attend or not is up to them to explain. Dede should be getting in front of the media and talking about the issues, flushing the others out.

Come out from hiding Doug and Bill!

If they don't then they simply do not deserve a vote, either vote for Dede or write in someone you know and like!

Football or Politics?

Well, for now it is football with the Watertown Red and Black defeating the Plattsburgh Northstars for the EFL football championship, but soon another race will determine whether or not Watertown can repreat over Plattsburgh in the 23rd Congressional race.

The race may just simply come down to access - where do you want your Representative in Congress to come from, next door or 3 hours away?

In race after political race North Country voters have shown parochialism is a strong factor in determining their choice for office!

So here is a continuation of rooting for the home team - Congratulations Red and Black

Less than one week before the Obama was awarded NPP, Gore Vidal (cousin to Al Gore) famous and often described as America's greatest essayist and best selling novelist who is known for his curmudgeon style had this to say about Obama.

"I was like everyone else when Obama was elected – optimistic. Everything we had been saying about racial integration was vindicated," he says, "but he's incompetent. He will be defeated for re-election. It's a pity because he's the first intellectual president we've had in many years, but he can't hack it. He's not up to it. He's overwhelmed.

He regrets changing his support from Hillary Clinton to Barack Obama.

Family Feud

Do you think Governor David Paterson has issues with Senator Darrel Aubertine? It certainly appears that way with all the flaps (NYPA, et al) these two seem to experience.

The Governor has thrown another anvil off the roof while Aubertine walked by, this time upending Aubertine's promise to bring road and bridge projects to upstate in exchange for his support of the MTA bailout. Eventhe NY Times took the bait, dubbing Aubertine the “North Country One”who was able to bring Albany to a screeching halt to win his demands.

Yesterday the Governor rejected any five year upstate road and bridge plan as "simply unaffordable",

Paterson is more concerned about cutting the deficit in the budget while the legislators are concerned about spending more it seems. Paterson has requested their assistance to cut spending and correct the mid year $3 billion dollar deficit, but Aubertine and company are sprinkling money around their districts like candy and Paterson has responded.

Is it just a case of disjointed priorities between the two or are there deeper divisions?

Which is it? Is the ad from the NRCC attacking Doug Hoffman, but does it give Hoffman credibility or does it rightfully point out his shortcomings?Which is it?

The response from Hoffman spokesman Rob Ryan will make you bust a gut - "So the NRCC is getting desperate and throwing mud."

Uhmmmmm, wait a minute - oh that is right - Hoffman's entire campaign has been slinging mud at Dede Scozzafava. Com'on you are a professional hit man for politicians, most certainly you can be more original than that, right?

Do They Get It?

If the Scozzafava campaign people have learned anything they should have one lesson down by now - the one issue Hoffman campaign will leap at any opportunity to paint her as a liberal!

If they continue to diddle around with the Working Families Party (WFP) they are playing with fire and no doubt will get burned beyond imagination. The attacks would be relentless and endless if she accepted this line.

Just like another quality campaign message - the Scozzafava campaign should just SAY NO to the WFP and say it now publicly!

The WFP is a toxic line poisoned by scandals, voter fraud, front organizations funneling money around campaigns and close association with scorched groups like ACORN. The electorate has seen all they need to see to understand their mission is seriously flawed.

There should be - no - none - zip - nada - in terms of hesitation on the Scozzafava campaign to say no thanks to this line and remove some imagery that she is being broad brushed with by Hoffman. Let Owens have the line the votes at all cost are not worth the association, if the Scozzafava is principled as their commercial states, then show it.

GOP Fall Dinner

The elephants have scheduled their fall dinner for October 16th at Bonnie Castle and will feature the GOP slate of candidates; Dede Scozzafava, Cheryl Lane, John Hallett and several legislators and local elected officials.

The guest speaker that evening will be Dean Skelos, New York State Minority leader. It will be guaranteed that Skelos will serve up some red meat to motivate the GOP as 2010 will be his last election cycle to regain the majority before reapportionment, which will relegate the minority party to a state of oblivion for many years to come.

His message (just a guess):

The Democrats in the Senate are not ready to lead as demonstrated this year.
The budget was disastrous this year and it passed with 32 Democrats voting in favor and 30 GOP against and claiming one vote (hint who he will name) could have stopped the budget.
Voting records of certain members (hint who he will name) and their similarities to NYC voting, where is their allegiance.
$13 billion increase in spending and $11 billion in taxes this year in one of the worse economic times we have seen recently was irresponsible.

Will the message be well receive and be enough to generate enthusiasm, show up to see. Also, will Skelos provide a glimpse of perhaps a new direction the GOP would take the state in a majority leadership in the Senate - that might be refreshing to hear for a change!

Followed up in an interview on CNN with
Republicans he believes are obstructing health care reform are "foot-dragging, knuckle-dragging Neanderthals."

Mr Grayson it is your party that has control of every policy making piece of the federal government - President, Senate and House - pass the bills that you feel are necessary. If Democrats feel discourse and debate on major legislation is unnecessary, by all means pass the bills.

No Show

~~Democrat~~, ~~Independence~~, Democrat in waiting candidate Bill Owens was a no show at a voter's forum held in his hometown.

Owens who has been evasive on the issues and consistently answered questions on issues with - I'll have to read more on it or I'll have to review it further - failed to show up for a forum that would have flushed answers out on issues important to the voter's of the 23rd Congressional district.

Someone needs to organize another forum and the candidates stances on issues should be known to voters. Glossy commercials should not be the determining factor in who you vote for in this election. If Owens continues to hide how could anyone vote for him?

Erie County Executive Chris Collins gets it!

Collins is proposing a budget that shifts county provided services to non governmental organizations who provide the same service. "Collins says he wants to streamline county government, supportnon-profits when possible and lessen Erie County’s legacy costs forretiree health care, now forecast at around $890 million."

His driving statement in the article - "It is my strong belief that Erie County should not be competing withlocal not-for-profit or community organizations that have theexpertise, ability and willingness to provide these services to countyresidents"

His county budget proposes a spending increase of only .2%.

Refreshing leadership this guy actually believes in assessing county government functions and separating core services from those other services that can be provided more efficiently by others.

Instead of getting out in front of their candidate, defining her and controlling the message the tail (Hoffman campaign) is wagging the dog (Scozzafava campaign) like a puppy chewing a shoe.

The Club for Growth has introduced a new ad for Hoffman today with the same old tired message and the Scozzafava campaign workers are crazy running around dropping press releases (below) responding to the ad.

“Dishonest Doug is probably demoralized by today’s poll numbers,which show he’s totally unelectable. Still, that’s no excuse forDishonest Doug and his special interest supporters to distort Dede’srecord of principled leadership. Someone should probably let DishonestDoug know that perpetuating lies with $250,000 in special interestmoney won’t make them true. Voters of the 23rd Congressional District,where Dishonest Doug doesn’t even live, are already rejecting hisnegative campaign.”

The only budgetDavid Paterson introduced was this year’s, which Dede voted against –in its entirety. The ad is false.

Who the heck cares which Governor introduced what budget? They missed the whole point! Let Hoffman crash and burn on his own, it will happen if you quit reacting and providing their campaign credence. Today's Siena poll found 71% of the people in the district do not even know Hoffman, yet this ad released today does not even mention him. His campaign does not have a message other than I am not Dede. IGNORE THEM.

Get on message folks, define your candidate, start taking some stances on issues and make your opponents react; tell people they she will not support the current direction the federal government is moving, tell people she does not support any more bailouts, buyouts or government control of private sector business, craft a health care position, on and on.

Get some marketing out on the internet, TV, radio, direct mail, etc that carries a message, just get with it!

Face Reality

Dede Scozzafava's spokesperson and campaign people need a good dose of reality, stop the whining and run a campaign.

The statement they issued (here) prior to the release of the Siena poll is attempting to brace people for something they are not prepared to deal with in reality - it will be closer than they like.

"Since John McHugh's confirmation, Dede has been under constant attack by her opponents and their special-interest backers;

Dede's opponents and their supporters have already aired hundreds-of-thousands of dollars of television advertisements;"

Ok, so what is their point? That is how campaigns are run; you promote yourself and attack your opponent or preferably their positions. If the opponent is controlling the message and your poll numbers are closer than they would like, then do something about it, CONTROL THE MESSAGE!

The people in the Scozzafava campaign need to drop their training wheels and start running a campaign.

Deputy Majority Leader of the New York State Senate - Democrat Jeff Klein speaks candidly about the ability of his colleagues and it is not flattering at all.

“Quite frankly, all of these people shouldn’t be in the majority ... I’d hate to have to be the judge, but they should reallybe in the minority. Because they’re really not ready to lead, theydon’t understand how the legislative process works, that no matter whoyou are—majority leader, deputy majority leader—you have job to do. Godo it!”

"Some Democrats do not take the time to read their own bills. Then they take offense when someone tries debating theirbills on the floor. And others are so out of touch that they thinkanyone who owns a home must be as rich as Michael Bloomberg. "

And if you want to know what is wrong with the Democrats in the New York State Senate this is how one of his colleagues describes Klein - “He is titular head of that faction that is all white.” That comment is pathetic!
