The War Against Dede - Debunking the Myth!

THIS IS A REPRINT, but someone did the research that proves Hoffman and Owens are blowing smoke up people's a--.

Friday’s Wall Street Journal reports on how Tea-Party conservatives are successfully trying to damage a moderate Republican’s shot at a vacant Congressional seat in Upstate New York that has long been a Republican seat. The Republican in question is Dede Scozzafava, a Republican State Assemblywoman who is running to suceed John McHugh, a Republican congressman that was tapped by President Obama to be Secretary to the Army.
Tea-Party conservatives along with other hard right activists have been trying hard to sink Scozzafava’s candidacy because of her socially liberal views on abortion and gay marriage. They have tried to paint her as a tax and spend liberal. Back in August, I wrote a blog post at Republicans United about the attacks that were then mounting against Scozzafava and I also did some digging around. Below is that that post are some of the highlights from that post showing her true record.
I decided to look into some Scozzafava’s views on various issues while in the New York legislature. There is a lot of info, but here are some of the highlights from Project VoteSmart. Let’s look at taxes:
Maintain Status a) Alcohol taxes
Maintain Status b) Capital gains taxes
Maintain Status c) Cigarette taxes
Maintain Status d) Corporate taxes
Slightly Decrease e) Gasoline taxes
Slightly Decrease f) Income taxes (incomes below $75,000)
Slightly Decrease g) Income taxes (incomes above $75,000)
Slightly Decrease h) Sales taxes
Maintain Status i) Vehicle taxes
Undecided k) Should the state sales taxes be extended to Internet sales?
No l) Should accounts such as a ?rainy day? fund be used to balance the state budget?
No m) Should fee increases be used to balance the state budget?
Yes n) Should the New York Legislature list discretionary spending item by item in the budget?
Well, she doesn’t look like a tax and spend liberal. What about crime?
X c) Support programs to provide prison inmates with vocational and job-related skills and job-placement assistance when released.
X d) End parole for repeat violent offenders.
e) Implement penalties other than incarceration for certain non-violent offenders.
X f) Strengthen penalties and sentences for drug-related crimes.
g) Minors accused of a violent crime should be prosecuted as adults.
X h) Require that crimes based on race, ethnic background, religious belief, sex, age, disability, or sexual orientation be prosecuted as hate crimes.
X i) Increase state funding for community centers and other social agencies in areas with at-risk youth.
X j) Eliminate the statute of limitations for criminal sex cases.
k) Eliminate the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits seeking damages in sex cases.
X l) Support the restriction of the sale of products used to make methamphetamine (e.g. tablets containing pseudophedrine, ephedrine and phenylpropanolamine).
Hmm…maybe she doesn’t support the death penalty, but she does seem to be tough on crime. What about guns?
X b) Ease state restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns.
No namby-pamby liberal there. One should add that Ms Scozzafava recieved a grade of “A” by the NRA Political Victory Fund in 2008 and an “F” from New Yorkers Against Gun Violence in the same year.
If that’s not enough, the liberal-leaning Albany Project blog also did some digging around and found out the shocking truth: Scozzafava is a conservative. They state:
The conclusion I draw from looking over numerous pieces of legislation is that Scozzafava on most issues is nothing more than your average Assembly Republican. Most of the votes that she did support the Democratic (or progressive) positions came when the whole Assembly voted unanimously for a bill. Scozzafava’s conservative positions are not reflected in the mainstream media, where she is labeled a “liberal” because of her stances on two social issues that, while important, should never define any candidate and should never be the sole indicator of a candidate’s ideology.
I see Scozzafava as someone who is far from the Glenn Becks of the world. But that doesn’t mean she is not conservative. The modern-day conservative is a different breed, but a lot of what Scozzafava stands for resembles an old school conservative. At best, she’s a moderate with conservative leanings. At worst, she’s a conservative Republican whose liberal stances on two social issues have given her an inaccurate label.
As I said in a recent post, what bothers many conservatives who are against Scozzafava is her stance on two social issues. Because of this she is tarred a “liberal” even though the rest of her record is pretty conservative.
If Scozzafava were to make it to Congress, my guess is she would stand with her party 80 percent of the time. Ronald Reagan had something to say about having someone as their 80 percent friend and not their 20 percent enemy. It’s too bad his supposed heirs have missed the message.

IVY: I'm going to stick out my neck a very long way here (and it probably will get whacked off), but put me down as "A Dem for Dede."

I hate not voting in any election and have only missed one or two elections due to being deployed in a war zone and couldn't meet the mailing deadline. I cherish my vote as my voice. This race is no exception, although it's an exceptional “race.”

I will support Dede over the other two candidates for a number of reasons:

1. She is pro-choice and in any critical medical decision of any kind, the patient, man or woman, must retain the right to choose. Re: abortion – maybe the woman will choose NOT to have one even when her doctors recommend it – it has happened in the past.

2. Gay marriage: let them marry and suffer like all other married couples. When they get divorced, they will suffer the same, too. It does not harm me or the sanctity of marriage in my view. If two people are in love, happy and living a decent life and not bothering anyone, then that's all that should matter.

3. Her concerns and knowledge about Fort Drum and the military in general as it relates to us in this area (* of which I also know plenty).

4. Her willingness to get out and mix with the people that she still represents in Albany...

For a host of philosophical and ideological reasons I cannot support Mr. Owens or Mr. Hoffman. I don't agree with Dede on everything, but I can support her in this race on the basics.

“Dems for Dede” has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

Don't try to confuse these Hoffman types with the truth IV. Are you trying to spoil their fun? I wish Reagan were around today, because I don't think he would go for these Hannity, Rushbo types who spread nothing but hate under the guise of "values". Reagan had more class than that.

People are just angry. If they can find a way to blame anybody they are going to take the opportunity. In a lot of ways, who can blame them. But making a Dede type a scapegoat doesn't make much sense. It won't work much longer anyway. The Pelosi/Obama types have pretty much taken all the money they can from working people. It won't matter who wins this election. Put your money in gold and hunker down. It's over. Unless you have good solid government retirement. And even then, your days are numbered. Gay marriage and pro-choice aren't issues that will matter much in the long run. You'll soon be trying to figure out how to pay your food bills and tax bills. If you're not there already.

Hoffman cannot be trusted. He lied about supporting Dede and has lied about her record on the state budget (saying she only voted against the budget so she could run for congress in the special when the vote was well before the announcement of Mchugh's nomination and saying that she has voted for every other budget when she voted against the 2003 budget, the 2nd largest tax increase in state history).

His 1st ad was entirely negative without saying one thing about his own stances or record.

He likes to call himself a fiscal conservative but has declined to name a single major program he would cut.

Hey IV, this is off topic but I have a question for you. If you haven't heard, since Monsserrate was found guilty yesterday of a misdemeanor assault charge Aubertine was one of 3 Senators to stand up and release a press release demanding Hiram resign. Since Aubertines release more have piled on. My question for you is; now that he has had his day in court and was found guilty will you give Aubertine credit for being one of the first to stand up and ask for his resignation?

Anonymous said...

Sorry Dede, the Working Family endorsement is enough to make me oppose you. Someday you will learn that they are evil.

Statement from state Senator Darrel J. Aubertine:

"The court has made its decision to convict Hiram Monserrate of assault and domestic violence, and I believe he should resign immediately. If he chooses not to resign, the Senate must take appropriate action immediately."

“Everyone deserves their day in court and the court found Hiram Monserrate guilty. Domestic violence cannot be tolerated, especially by a body of government charged with making fair and equitable laws for all. For the good of New York State and the Senate, he should step down.”

6:27 - Ooops - I think Owens got the WFP line, didn't he?

If so, you owe Dede an apology bigtime.

What in hell you talking about dan Malkin is a hotty.Have you looked a dede? geeez

Danny M. Francis (Eyepublius) said...

i called for both Espada and Monserrate to step down months ago, when the "coup and word of Monserrate's troubles were made public..."

Day in Court - yes; of course, but now that day is done (unless of course, naturally, he appeals) ... and he will - but, guilty of domestic violence is serious ... so say goodbye. Pack your bags.

Yup, Dannie is right on this one too. And Darrel should be commended as well. The trial is over and at least some of the facts have been established. Hiram has got to go. If the Donkeys stand for anything, if the State Senate stands for anything, Hiram has got to go, NOW.

I'm solidly with Dan on this one. And Darrel deserves credit too. It would be easier to say nothing. And safer too. On this one he is proving to be one of us. And you people know how Dannie and I slug each other and how I'm not known as a Dem lover. But give credit where credit is due. If you have influence in the Donkey party, tell 'em to do the right thing. Hiram is a disgrace to us all.

Crime IV?

What about Dede's support for the legalization of pot??? Dede supports the legalization of drugs that have flooded our communities and should remain illegal.

Come on? Not only that now Dede has to combat the argument that she was against taxes before she was for them... and now she is against them again? I mean the who tax pledge thing shows she can't be trusted, that she can be easily manipulated and pressured, and that she isn't principled. She has no spine. That's not the leadership we need. You must agree. No?

11:50, dede voted AGAINST repealing the rockefeller drug laws. it is true she favors medical marijuana but that is not the same as legalization. it's like how steroids are illegal except if you have a dr's prescritption.

there are valid reasons for opposing dede and supporting another candidate but people should stick to the facts.

Two misplaced kisses of death?

1. Newt Gingrich endorses Dede: ouch.

2. William Kristol says she'll "pull a Arlen Specter and become a DEM?"

Kristol Slams Dede in the Weekly Standard

What she should do is right now discount and dismiss these way outside "endorsements, brush off the Kristol-style remarks," and then move on with HER campaign, not theirs, and at high speed.

This ugliness overall will get worse as we move through October, bet on it.

FN: This flap within the GOP (far-radical left vs. moderate-other Repubicans) may well tear the GOP apart in the process ... only time will tell.

There may be little, if any, healing on this divide in the GOP deck of cards in the long run, however.

Anonymous said...

I think she already has pulled an "Alen Spector". Most all Republican legislators in the Empire State have done that, which is one reason why we're in the mess we're in. The Dems will always be the Dems, fat, happy, and fully owned by lawyers and special interests. They live in a dreamworld. But the Republicans have stood for nothing these past few years. I don't know which is worse. The Dems admit they want to kill off taxpayers. The Reps lie about it and say they're friends of the taxpayer. Sometimes I'd rather know where I stand when dealing with dishonest, self-serving crooks.

Anonymous said...

But then again the Reps are all racists and the Dems slice up their girlfriends by accident. It's all tough to sort out.

Hey 11:50 Pot should be legalized, it's no worse than the rot-gut whiskey that's sold in govt. controlled liquor stores.

Anonymous said...

6:27
You are absolutely right He has the WFP endorsement. My mistake.

Anonymous said...

Hey 4:28, the booze stores aren't government controlled, they are free to do anything that the government lets them do. They can even sell cork screws now.

Anonymous said...

Sure there govt. controlled, You have to buy licenses, charge tax, pay a floor tax,(thanks AJR), and then you have to be careful of the various stings for underage drinking, If pot was legalized, or in the least decriminalized, the police could go after the big time dealers, not the users.

YUP that has worked well in calif.
has'nt it? they now have over 1500 pot shops and thousands of surfer dudes with prescriptions. But it is a taxable business,a democrats wet dream.

What difference does it make where the sales tax comes from?? Not any different if it comes from a greasy cheeseburger and fries from BK's, Govt. loves sales tax money, I've heard the DARE program Mantra for years, but the truth is it doesn't work.

Nice to see the Feds changing their attitude on "POT".

Danny M. Francis (Eyepublius) said...

My 2:37 post: I'm withdrawing my "support" - the police call on the reporters in Lowville, and the rally that backfired at Hoffman's HQ did me in ... I can't stand incompetence coupled with poor judgment and bullish tactics... from either side.

I may sit this one out.

Anonymous said...

No you won't Dan. You say that, but you'll go into the booth and do what you were born and trained to do. Vote Donkey. All this talk is just that. We know where your heart is. You can't vote for Dede. And Hoffman's independence is a threat to your very soul.
