New York State's Fiscal Mess - Reason #2

New York State's revenue has tumbled and due to a budget that is so highly leveraged there is no ability to withstand such a downturn. New York State government is not positioned to fall back on any reserves to gain some time for proper decision making, it takes emergency sessions that produce radical cuts.

These Guys Are Anxious

This is Malcolm Smith, D-Queens, and he is the guy who Darrel Aubertine asks, how high, when he is told to jump. Smith is anxious to lead a Senate majority and has called for a meeting the day following the election.
This guy, Jeff Klein, D-Bronx, is the deputy leader and who wants nothing more than to be the leader. He will be taking the battle straight at Smith for the leadership post, Klein has been directing the campaign operations for the Senate Democrats and will be expecting pay back.
These guys are saying, not so fast. Senate majority leader Dean Skelos, R- Rockville Centre, and Thomas Libous, R-Binghamton (upstate that is) are confident they will retain the majority and therefore continue to provide the needed checks and balances to governing.
Libous truly is one of us, he blogs, read it here.

This Is Not A Game Of Monopoly

The Democrats are giddy over the thought of wiping out any opposing views to governing, at both the state and national levels. It is likely they will have major gains in both the House, Senate come Tuesday, and with possible control of the Presidency, the whole show is theirs. The Democrats at the state level would like no more than to have their views unchecked by controlling the Senate.

This is not the simple idea that you have your views, I have mine and we each hope we win. There is an opinion that only one viewpoint should be allowed and that multiple opinions are not acceptable. This is not healthy in any view of good government or in any form or fashion of free speech. It is not healthy for government to be lopsided for either Republicans or Democrats; this is not a game of monopoly.

We have witnessed excessive political power by both parties, we have witnessed both parties at the bottom of a cycle and none of it is pretty and none of it last long, that is the American way, politics is cyclical. There is nothing wrong with winning, that is the competitive nature of politics, but there is something wrong with absolute power of a single party, there is something wrong with the wipe out the other side mentality of both parties.

Good government works well when there is competing ideas; when bi-partisan compromise and solutions arise that bring everyone together behind a solution. Arrogance in the past by Republicans or upcoming by Democrats will not win the day with the voters, solutions arrived at by working together, will win the voter's hearts and minds.

History proves governing has seldom gone well under one party rule. The people who talk about turning regions red or blue are the hard-core liberals or absolute socially conservatives and they are intolerant of opposing opinions; good governing needs to be more moderate.

New York State's Fiscal Mess - Reason #1

There is plenty of blame for New York State's fiscal woes, but the key to the financial disaster is the spending. The chart below depicts the spending free for all that has been occurring in New York State. If the budget kept pace with inflation it would now be $91.4 billion, instead of $120.8 billion, which is near double the rate of inflation.

Senate Split - 31 to 31

What happens if the Senate Democrats pick up just one seat in this fall's election? New York State will have a split Senate at 31 apiece for Republicans and Democrats.

The three Democrats; Espada, Diaz and Kruger, who have have formed the independent caucus will play a signficant role in governing this state. The three Senators are Democrats but they have not sided with Democrats in the past, therefore they are up for sale!

If the Republicans are successful in picking up the Stachowski seat in western New York, then they will retain the majority. In which case, the North Country would be better served by David Renzi.

Renzi Bus Blitz

Dave Renzi is on a three day bus blitz of the entire 48th Senate District, covering all three counties.Day one covered Oswego County, day two, today is covering St. Lawrence County today and day three will be a wrap up home county swing in Jefferson County.

News Release

The Dave Renzi for Senate campaign rolled on Saturday, picking up momentum and support from voters throughout Oswego County, as the candidate launched his district-wide bus blitz.

Renzi supporters, energized by Saturday's strong endorsement from another major newspaper in the district, joined the candidate, Congressman John McHugh and others, as they met with voters at popular spots throughout the county.

"Everywhere I go, I am meeting enthusiastic supporters – and picking up a few more – as we head into the home stretch toward victory on Tuesday," said Renzi. "My message of positive change and fresh ideas is connecting with voters, who are tired of seeing our needs ignored by Albany."

The blitz continues Sunday at the district's northern end, with stops in the St. Lawrence County communities of Gouverneur, Hammond, Morristown, Ogdensburg, Heuvelton, Lisbon, Waddington, Madrid, Canton, DeKalb Junction and Richville.

So Close, Yet So Far Away

The Presidential election is so close, next Tuesday, yet the polls are so far away from each other that it can make your head spin.

Zogby: McCain up 1
Republican John McCain has pulled back within the margin of error… McCain outpolled Obama 48% to 47% in Friday, one day, polling. He is beginning to cut into Obama’s lead among independents, is now leading among blue collar voters, has strengthened his lead among investors and among men, and is walloping Obama among NASCAR voters. Joe the Plumber may get his license after all…

Gallup: Obama by 10
Barack Obama leads John McCain in Gallup Poll Daily tracking interviewing conducted Wednesday through Friday by an identical 52% to 42% margin among both traditional likely voters and expanded likely voters. Obama leads by a similar 52% to 41% margin among all registered voters.

Rasmussen: Obama by 5
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows Barack Obama with 51% of the vote, John McCain with 46%. The race continues to remain remarkably stable at the national level--this is the 37th straight day that Obama’s support has been between 50% and 52% (see trends).

Watertown Daily Times - Endorses Renzi

The Watertown Daily Times endorsed David Renzi for Senate.

Here are the highlights of the editorial:
  • Under Aubertine, legislation for various communities in the district has languished.
  • New York State will be best represented by a balance of power, preventing excessive political action.
  • Upstate interests in New York State government are the domain of Republicans while Democrats are focused on downstate.
  • We have items that downstate wants - our power and prisons. We need a representative who will demand respect and protect what we have.
  • Even as Aubertine has been a member of a majority - his interest have been cast aside for the broader agenda of the conference. (Ineffective)
  • Dave Renzi will be effective, he will not back down from people.
This is the important part, to which I strongly agree with - Darrel Aubertine is a nice guy, but he is over his head in this job!

The second editorial worth the time invested to read - Wind Ethics.

There is an underlying message in that editorial as well.
