State GOP Chair Doesn't Favor a Aubertine/Barclay Rematch

New York State GOP Chairman Joseph Mondello made a comment yesterday leaving the County Chair's meeting that he thought Will Barclay was a "very nice young man", but "he might not have been the right candidate". Well, whether he was the right candidate or not to some people, a comment like that by Mr. Mondello does not help the young Barclay. He should have ended his remarks specific to Barclay with he is a very nice young man.

When ask if the lesson from the 48th Senate District race was "the importance of right candidate", Mondello replied “It’s a lesson from the 48th, and from my 30 years in politics.”

Chairman Mondello, if that is the only lesson from the the 48th Senate District race, you need to go back to school.

The Chairman should rightfully know you never throw a candidate under the bus, especially when they are a current office holder. Whether or not you like Will Barclay, he has a right to be angry over those comments.

A lot of good intelligent politicians lose races at one point in time in there life. Former Governor Casey of PA lost on numerous attempts to win the seat, President Ronald Reagan, even Darrel lost a race before. It is not a career ending event.

Darrell lost a race? I don't recall that.

In 2000 Darrel ran against longtime Assemblyman H. Robert Nortz. Nortz had a stranglehold on the seat for 24 years at the time. Aubertine ran against Nortz for what was at the time the 114th assembly district. Nortz won the race by nearly 4%, but it was really the race that reshaped North Country politics. Darrel proved that a Democrat could compete in the North Country, because of this the Assembly democrats after the 2000 census created the River District to try and even up the playing field. Bob Nortz decided to retire instead of facing another difficult battle with Aubertine. Without an incumbant holding the seat Darrel was able to win in 2002.
Political IV is correct, Darrel has lost before and has certainly bounced back strong. It certainly is possible to bounce back from defeat, although it is not easy.

That race in 2000 didnt prove Democrats can compete in the North Country. What it proved is Aubertine can.
There is no other Democrats that can compete up here, Aubertine is the only North Country Dem with common sense and a willingness to work, the rest of the Dems are all just big dreamers.
