JC Legislative Races

Jefferson County Legislature seats are up for election this year, while most expect the incumbents to seek re-election, there is an open seat.

Robert Boice in district 11 is not seeking re-election and the Democrats are looking to former city councilman and current district 11 resident Paul Simmons. Simmons a former mayor candidate who ran against Jeff Graham and was defeated before moving into District 11.

District 15 long time incumbent Jim St. Croix is likely to face opposition from "The General Store" operator Anthony Doldo.

The NY-U.S. Senate race (Gillibrand now has Obama backing and chasing away potential DEM primary candidates) reads the WDT by Bob Gorman - actually a prety good run down...

I guess the DEMS are afraid: (1) to have her compete in the arena of ideas fearing she might be damaged, or (2) even lose to a fellow DEM more in tune with the entire state and (3) thus - the seat would end up in GOP hands ... because if she has no primary she appears like a strong, seasoned 'incumbent' on the campaign trail?

The WDT piece is worth reading Gillibrand to Avoid DEM Primary?Let me say as honestly as possible ... I'd love to oppose her in a state-wide DEM primary -

I think I can outshine her on several tough critical issues: (1) the two wars (I am a combat Vet); (2) detainee treatment (I was an interrogator and know the law and rules); (3) DOD issues like recruiting, budgets, and troop business (I was a troop); (4) senior issues (I am one now - ouch); (5) education (my major since USMC days); (6) a lot of Upstate issues that I heard a lot about as I traveled all over the state for 12 in my previous DOD/Army civ job).

Support - um ... now that's the hard part - a different issue, and tougher now that Schumer and Obama seem to be working on sewing up the ranks for her and chasing away all DEM wannbe's.

And as Gorman says and I totally agree - an open primary would suit us very well. And, you all know, I love challenges and a good fight (race)!

What the f*ck does all of that have to do with the Jeff Cty Legislature, Danny?!?!?!?!?

Gee, Danny. You found a political office that you HAVEN'T run for yet? Bring me about 20 copies of your nominating petitions, and I will process them for you.

so Dan, is waterboarding torture or not? what are you going to do about jobs for the North Country? How are you going to reduce the cost of living in NY and keep royalty like Golisano here?

To Anon. 6:28AM
So, which ones do you believe can?
Hope one of them is my legislator!

Dear CL,

Been waiting to hear your take on the Lane lady, I assume you went to the elephants dinner the other night being the good tusk hanger that you are.

Danny M. Francis (Eyepublius) said...

Anonymous 8:01... Yes, "water-boarding" is torture and has been for decades and we have prosecuted and jailed people for it.

It's not just jobs in the North Country, but it's jobs in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and all along the Southern Tier, in the Mohawk Valley, and elsewhere.

Jobs is always the #1 issue in NYS - for w/o jobs, there is no money, no businesses per se, and people have a hard time living ...

Jobs is the deal maker and deal wrecker.

Not just in NYS, but all across the nation, chasing rich people out to other places is bad business, and the Tom Golisano example is an excellent example.

Also, taxing seniors who finally retire, have paid off their mortgage, raised their families and now are relegated to eating dog food in assisted living conditions in FL - in other words, we chase them out, too, and that's not right.

Yes, I have run for several different levels of government - for one reason: I want to produce and serve - besides, you need people like me (LOL) ...

You know what? A couple of years ago a couple of Republicans told me that they didn't always agree with me on all issues, but they also said, "We need people like you who keep trying."

That motivates me considerably - effective leadership and service to the public in an honest way is my main goal.

Anon 6:28am : Well why don't you let us know what votes they have made ver the lets say pass five years that have been bad for the north country?? I think they have lowered the tax rate five years in a row. I think they have work throught the jail issue since we dont send out people anymore.

So what do you think they have done wrong? If you think yours so bad why dont you go pick up a petition?? If they do such a bad job why do 8-10 go without anyone running against them every two years?

Funny thing Danny, our own troops have been waterboarded as part of their training. This has been going on for years. Is this not torture when being done with our own guys? Why didn't you know about this? Maybe it was training that involved special forces types only.

Danny M. Francis (Eyepublius) said...

Anon 10:42> Yes our Special Forces, Special Ops, SEAL, and Recon troops all receive SERE training with all kinds of bad sh*t inflicted on them in very, very closely controlled situations, and always with one purpose: To show them what the enemy might do to them should they be captured. And, NOT to illustrate what we do.

I know the rules and the law, and I taught the "R" (resist) part of SERE training ... and believe me (BTW: whether you do or not, I don't give a flying f**k), I know the rules and the law and the bounds.

i find it completely baffling that the talking point "how can it be torture if we do it to our own troops?" has any traction at all, yet some people must really buy into it, since it seems to get repeated over and over and over. of course waterboarding is torture. as dan rightly notes, we do it to our own troops under highly controlled circumstances to give them some preparation for torture they might face from enemy captors. it's preposterous to suggest that somehow makes it not torture.

Herm: Thanks for your comments. I wonder why some here can't grasp the gravity of this issue?

But, "closed or narrow minded" does come to mind? (snicker)

It can't be torture because Bush said a hundred times we don't torture. And if you disagree now, why were you silent then?

Anon 8;20, It depends on your perspective, Sure the rate was lowered,or the levy, but did spending go up??? Of course Govt. is addicted to sales tax, has Jeff. Co. ever lowered spending? I wonder if it would be different with a elected Co. Admin.?

I think the County Adm should be elected.

Anonymous said...

Yes it should be, But have you noticed the petty politics that's gets in the way?? Like no accountablity for gas use by a county employee, spending money for a road that goes nowhere?, paying someone to tear down a building and it still stands. The list is endless and so I guess are taxpayers dollars.

I don't know what this thread is about. But Dan is cussin' and the Frog came out from hiding and, well, the point is, I don't understand.
But it is absolutely exciting when people really seem to care.

Anon 9:07: Yepper, hard to find a place to put a comment or opinion sometimes ... and sometimes a note that seems "out of place" will lead to other posts and that part is good for wide-open dialogue ... which we need more of.

I agree Dan. PIV should have a thread where "the people" can suggest any topic they want. It will either go from there, or fade out. Ah, maybe it wouldn't work.

Hope it doesn't rain all weekend. I got boat gas to burn and dog walks to do.
