Chalk Up One More To "Minor Tax Problems"

The Dallas Morning News reports.

Add former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk to the list of Obama Cabinet picks with tax problems.
The Senate Finance Committee says he underpaid by $9,975 in the last three years.
Senate aides uncovered the shortfall during weeks of vetting, and Kirk – the administration’s designated point person on trade — has promised to pay the Internal Revenue Service in full.
The problems: Kirk deducted too much for season tickets to the Dallas Mavericks and too much for tax preparation fees, and failed to report as income speaking fees that he donated to his alma mater, Austin College.
The full political implications won’t be clear until at least next week.
Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., is standing behind Kirk, though today he postponed a long-delayed confirmation hearing until Monday, four days later than planned, citing a conflict with the White House health care summit.
“Mayor Kirk is the right person for this job and I will work to move his nomination quickly. I am confident he can successfully restore the confidence of Congress and the American people in a balanced international trade agenda,” Baucus said in a statement.
The White House shrugged off Kirk’s tax problems as a “few minor issues” and said the nomination remains on track.
“We are confident that Mayor Kirk will be confirmed,” said White House spokesman Ben LaBolt.

Ah, what the heck, just say you're sorry, it has worked for just about the entire selection process, we can't be bothered anymore by Democrats who don't pay their taxes.

What is this? Does O go looking for criminals to put in his cabinet? I thought paying taxes was something we all did, and were expected to do. I thought it was patriotic to pay taxes. Vice Prez Biden told us so.

This is not looking good.

Hey, how great it is to see Shawn Heneshee making time to put together a video of himself, mixing in a wee bit of talk about the Irish Festival. Notice how his NAME is on the top line, while the festival is underneath? What a famous guy he is. As is common with Shaaun, there is no opportunity for response. I thought this thread, about politicians, was appropriate.

* Minor tax problems (which I deplore) vs. these Bushism?

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration threw open the curtain on years of Bush-era secrets Monday, revealing anti-terror memos that claimed exceptional search-and-seizure powers and divulging that the CIA destroyed nearly 100 videotapes of interrogations and other treatment of terror suspects.

The Justice Department released nine legal opinions showing that, following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Bush administration determined that certain constitutional rights would not apply during the coming fight.

The legal memos written by the Bush administration's Office of Legal Counsel show a government grappling with how to wage war on terrorism in a fast-changing world.

The conclusion, reiterated in page after page of documents, was that the president had broad authority to set aside constitutional rights.

1. Fourth Amendment protections against unwarranted search and seizure did not apply in the United States as long as the president was combatting terrorism.

Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Yoo wrote later:

2. "The current campaign against terrorism may require even broader exercises of federal power domestically."

3. Sept. 25, 2001: Yoo discussed possible changes to the laws governing wiretaps for intelligence gathering. In that memo, he said the government's interest in keeping the nation safe following the terrorist attacks might justify warrantless searches.

* Yoo, now a professor at the University of California at Berkeley School of Law, did not return messages seeking comment.

I wonder why not?

The story is from here

7:51 Diaper Man, I usually like to know what you're bawling about. Care to clarify? Just curious.

Same night, Shyawn Hennnesye drops his own name from the self promotional video he put out for the Irish Festival. Very interesting, Sean. I thought the whole idea was to promote and Irish Festival, not to promote YOU. But if you ever decide to come out and talk with people, perhaps making a run at an even higher paying political hack job than the one you currently hold, you will have to come out and mix it up with real people.

I do thank you for taking your name off the main promotional video. That showed good judgement.

The whole tax thing has become tired and boring. Let's move beyond it to what's important.

Given the track record of the appointees with respect to taxes, I have started to see Biden's comment for what it was.

I guess I don't care how much they raise my taxes if I don't have to pay them.

Only fools pay taxes. That's becoming increasingly clear.

And all this time I've been getting upset about tax increases. Now I know why so many people haven't cared.

Not your best effort.

I wonder who does Shaywn Henesiees hair? The man is very, very attractive.

Is it the Irish Festival or the Shawnessy Promotional Festival? I don't blame him. You never know when you have to pull in your favors and tray to land another patronage job. Who can blame him for using the Irish Fest to set himself up for a better future.

Sleazy, but typical political activity.

7:00 your right this looks downright shi**y. We have this band of thieves running the country into the ground. We are supposed to accept tax rates/rules from these people? I don't think so, you put a thief gaurding the piggy bank and see what happens. Somehow they have all this money to spend like gangbangers on crack. Tax revolt coming you watch. If you're a bum, you don't pay taxes. If you're a drunk, you don't pay taxes. If you have a few kids by daddies unknown, you don't pay taxes. If you have a bad back, you don't pay taxes. If you own a few slums, you pay only certain kinds of taxes. If you're rich, you pay only the taxes on money you can't hide. And if you're Democrat, like Charlie Rangel or a cabinet member, you aren't expected to pay taxes. Has Obama been around these people so long that he thinks this is normal?

Oh, BTW: I didn't see any GOP outrage at Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) for his business deals at the Portsmouth business park built at the defunct Pease Air Force Base, once home to nuclear bombers.

He collected at least $240,017 to $651,801 from his investments there, while Senate records show he arranged at least $66 million in federal aid for the former base.

Gregg said he violated no laws or Senate rules.

Me: Of course, he didn't violate any rules or laws... LOL - he writes the laws and rules - so if there's any "violations" he's know about them, right?

LOL

at that military base in New Hampshire that he managed to get millions for and he and his brother / family made millions in deals to the base for their property nearby.

But did he pay his taxes, Dan?

We can jump around doing the "ya but" thing all you want, but we were kind of talking about paying taxes. Are you trying to avoid the issue or are you just frustrated all over the place. If it's the latter, I understand.

Let's start with something and stick with it.
