Poor or Wrong Priorities

FLOTUS visited a homeless shelter the other day and while serving up some vittles this homeless man snapped a picture of the First Lady with his cell phone camera. I do not deny anyone - anything and wish people work hard and achieve great success, but (exit question here) are priorities in the wrong place if someone cannot afford an apartment yet they walk around with a cell phone?

Say (dairy or non dairy) Cheese!

do you know that man personally? how do you know he hasn't only recently become unemployed? -- maybe he won't have that cell phone much longer! for that matter, how do you even know he's unemployed? -- maybe he's a volunteer, or someone who just stopped by to see the first lady! how do you know it's even his cell phone? -- maybe it's a friend's!

i'd recommend everyone to read what balloon juice (which i partially ripped off) has to say about this.

What makes you so angry? The man in line could be one of hundreds of people excited to meet the first lady. He may have been there as an observer, worker, passerby, fellow volunteer, etc. You have no idea of the status of the man. You saw him as black, made your assumption and let your natural instincts make a poor decision. Shame on you. Shame on this blog. And don't make the excuse that I am just another flaming lib, because I am NOT. I am a NYC conservative that found you through DaBrinker. I was brought up to recognize bad behavior and I found it upstate.

And also you North Country Hick, make that vittles!

All drug dealers have cell phones. It is part of the cost of doing business.

I feel so guilty about making a joke like that. Maybe some counseling is in order.

As a friend in politics, let me say again that we need a blog that presents the conservative view in a more positive light. We need a better image. I had a close friend (deceased) and a wonderful man who made the mistake of telling a racist joke at a golf course. He lost his judgeship as a result. Some still believe that our party has nothing to gain with this kind of taunting.

I don't understand your position.

From your postings I put you as a liberal in sheep's clothing.

This post is obviously a post that is trying to point out, with humor, the fact that we have the richest poor people in the world.

Say what you want about our economy we are better off than all others.

What total crap. The guy was presented as homeless. He also had a cell phone. The irony of having a cell phone yet no place to live was pointed out.

Get over yourselves, people. If the guy was white, green, or purple, the same irony would have applied. People are getting tired of this guilt complex you people seem to have been born with. Why don't you do that beat yourself up thing. I'm not sure the country, or the religion. They run around and whip themselves until they bleed to try to make up for all the sins that they were responsible for. They do it once a year. You could do it weekly for all I care.

So Correct, yet so Stupid.

Lighten up, faithful readers.

Why reward a low level post by taking it to an even lower level. Is your purpose here to advance a political cause that you believe in and want to convince others of or is this blog just a vehicle for chastising beings who are not as fortunate as yourself? Many of you here can not even make a point without insulting or calling names. Shame on you.

What if you lose your job? What if you lose your business? It could happen.

I'll bet he is not homeless, likely he's just after a free lunch like the rest of the country is lining up for.I remember the pictures as a kid of people lining up for free gov'nt cheese.Always pissed grampa off. Like my grandaddy always said if you build it they will come. For the free lunch

If this was meant to be humor, then you need new writers.

You are just trying to cover for the fact it is not going your way. It is not funny. Your blog is not funny. Your blog does not help the conservative cause. I just wanted to be honest with you about it.
If you don't care, so be it.

no worries about the accidental reject, piv. i have to say, although i obviously have my issues with this blog, and i know a lot of commenters here (and elsewhere) complain about their comments getting rejected, i've never had a single one turned away. and it's always struck me that when people's comments don't seem to make it through, it's most likely due to a bad internet connection, not malfeasance on iv's (and other blogger's) part. maybe i'm wrong about that in some cases, but again, that's how it strikes me.

the balloon juice post i mentioned is here.

i strongly disagree that iv's post contained any racial element. i do think it was far too quick to pass judgment on the person in the photo -- that's the real problem.

I strongly suspect that this gentleman had chauffer a number of homeless to the shelter for a meal. We should not make light of his volunteering by providing such a valuable community service.

With regards to his taking a picture, I am certain that he is simply awestruck by the "star-quality" of the First Lady, which is only outdoen by that of his husband.

Shame on you, PIV!

Father, please forgive me for making judgments on the man with the cell phone. I now feel so, so empty inside for what I've done. Please help me to see, that when people make foolish and childish statements without basis, then they aren't really stupid people. They are actually very smart folks who have watched too much network television, and are the product of our government school system. Above all else, teach me to ignore how I conduct my private life regarding the poor and minorities. Teach me to remember the most important this is how many politically correct words I can use, and how easily offended I can be when someone phrases something that can offend a focus group, or any group of fools for that matter. If only I can learn to bow my head in shame, each and every day, so as to show people how sorry I am that I was born white.
May guilt become part of my day. Amen.

you guys here are nuts

Thank you, 3:17. In this day and age, I'll take that as an extreme compliment.

3:17, I am totally offended by you referring to me as "nuts". You don't know me. You don't know the obstacles I faced as a child, or the limitations I face each and every day as a challenged adult. You don't know what I have overcome, or what I have contributed in my small and limited way. How will you feel if I find your words so hurtful that I cannot go on any longer. What if I, heaven forbid, have to call in sick next week. It will all be because of you, and people like you, who just don't care.
