STATEMENT FROM AUSTIN SHAFRAN, PRESS SECRETARY FOR
SENATE MAJORITY LEADER MALCOLM A. SMITH
“This was an illegal and unlawful attempt to gain control of the Senate and reverse the will of the people who voted for a Democratic Majority. Nothing has changed, Senator Malcolm A. Smith remains the duly elected Temporary President and Majority Leader. The real Senate Majority is anxious to get back to governing, and will take immediate steps to get us back to work.”

Part of the issue I discussed in a post below this page...
I firmly believe, as I think most rational people believe, you stay in the party that you ran on until the next election, period. Then you can change.
Let's make that state law.
A pretty task... a one sentence law. But, it will not happen...

Dan,
No one switched parties here. Two Democrats decided to vote with Republicans to unseat Malcolm Smith.
Headline should read ".... Former Senate Majority Leader Smith"
IV - semantics - LOL ...
I think we all jumped the gun - the legal beagles will sort through this - but my "intent" was to say that when one runs as a DEM/GOPer, they stay DEM/GOPer, voting record aside of course on issues, ... which I understand, but on estab re-reestab minority/majority - a shade of diff I think.
Otherwise people would change leadership on practically every vote or issue up for consideration and vote - they like it, elect DEM leader; they don't, get a GOP leader and vice versa - that's more my point.
That's what I want, Dan. My government selected by the legal beagles. Didn't you bitch about that stuff during the Gore/Bush deal?
I love this. Pass the popcorn. As the ship sinks, these guys are fighting for their patronage money and likely the right to pay their excorts the fees they have come to expect. I hope this goes on for months. Then we won't have to worry about more taxes, gun laws, bottle laws, thruway fees and license fees. If they are fighting amongst themselves, they can't chase any more business out of the state. Now the teachers, they don't need any more money till they get back from the Bahamas, and that will be Sept. So the children are same. Let's watch some baseball, do some fishin', and hope these guys go at it for a long, long time. This should ruin their summer.
What have they ever done for us?
Anon 7:47 "747" how appropriate - now you can veer off course and crash...
I never said legal beagles will
'select' our government and I would never support that... I was addressing the legality of changing party majorities like happened today in Albany by two angry DEMs ...
That may not be legal was my point.
Of course you don't believe in things being legal or rule of law, right?
the longer they fight, the less they legislate, the better off we all are!
so someone is saying go along to get along? it was the right thing for McHugh to do, and the wrong thing for Aubertine to do? vote party line til your term's up? makes sense ta me........yeah, right!
I want people voting issues not parties. Sorry DF
No shot intended, Dan. Was just poking fun. I just have no respect whatsoever for these people. And you're right, now it's possible it could be in the hands of lawyers. How comforting.
I believe this country has been damaged severely by the two party system. Any event that sheds light on the absurdity of this system is a good thing, in my view. How stupid this is. Two criminals, who weren't criminals yesterday, now side with the other side. The end effect might be to limit the power of the strongest thug of all, that being Shelly. Neither side confronts reality. Neither side does anything but sell their power to special interests. Probably the best thing that can happen to us mere citizens is for them all to stay in court and argue this forever. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. And you (rightly) call ME pathetic.
You Repubs are a joke. You don't want things settled by "legal beagles" but its okay if Golisano can pay for a coup. What really is in danger here is democracy and the rule of law.
You know, 3:22, I do see your point. Sometimes I get so disgusted with it all that as long as rats are getting hammered, I don't really care who is paying the bill.
I do believe Golisano is a reformer though. He backed donkeys big time the last election. And you have to respect the amount of money he has given to good causes.
