There He Goes Again

They just can not help themselves from going negative.

I think Darrel, Drew and Cort missed another memo; people want you to talk about the issues and leave the negative connotations out, including these subtle negative hints in your press releases. Aubertine's campaign manager, Cortney Ruddy,  is infamous for his negative nuances in campaign material, he was the architect of the negative campaign for special election and he is doing it again.

There are reports coming from Oswego County (from Democrats no less) that calls are being made and they contain negative messages against Dave Renzi while simultaneously Darrel Aubertine kicks off his campaign in Oswego County.

Follow that up with a press release that carries the same tone of a recently past election and bingo, you have a repeat of that nasty plot.

In the press release they refer to Dave Renzi as "David Renzi, Esq," as if to draw some distinction between Dave and Darrel and as if to make Dave appear as an elitist.
Esquire (abbreviated Esq.) is a term of British origin, originally used to denote social status. Ultimately deriving from the medieval squires who assisted knights, the term came to be used automatically by men of gentle birth. The social rank of Esquire is that above gentleman. More specifically, though, a distinction was made between men of the upper and lower gentry, who were "esquires" and "gentlemen"
Later in the press release Mr. Ruddy and Drew Mangione plant one more zinger with a negative message of inferred income levels.
"Maybe, Mr. Renzi's real problem with this plan is that people making more than $250,000 a year will only benefit from the tax cap and the mandate relief portion, and will not receive targeted relief beyond their existing basic STAR reduction,” said Mr. Ruddy.
If they are attempting to make a point with this statement it is irrelevant, people with that level of income do not get any benefit now and Renzi has not proposed it. It is inserted into the press release for only one reason, a feeble attempt at class warfare.

And in reality the circuit breaker plan with the elimination of the STAR rebate relief proposed by Aubertine would negatively effects middle income households.

Earlier today a post about going after opponents position is acceptable and it is, without the negative nuances.

People are smart and see through this type of activity and the media should too. The public has spoken loud and clear on negative campaigns, but again this campaign team has missed the memo.

It should not suprise anyone that Darrel's campaign is going negative. From what I am hearing on the street people are really considering Dave. He comes off as genuine and compassionate.

I have know Dave for several years and I am voting for him. I am going to change to Renzi for this election.

I think Darrel has let us down. Not on purpose, but by not knowing his job. Then all I have heard is him and his staff blaming others or coming up with less than believable answers.

Why won't Aubertine just accept responsibilty for his screwups?

Good luck Dave,

So they are using the guy who helped win the special. Crap! Lights out, Dave. Better luck next time.

Didn't Dave already go negative? He had a push poll about last month. He attacked Darrel at the forum. And he launched a tag line that is borderline offensive.

And Dave Renzi is the one who promised not to go negative. I can't wait to see the ad with him saying one thing and doing another. That will be cool.

Ha! IV are you criticizing someone for being negative? You are the most negative character assasin around. Lets also not forget that Dave "fun campaign" Renzi went negative with push polling. Or was that a "comparitive" poll?

"From what I am hearing on the streets" -- Hey, Renzi volunteer intern! Who said you could stop putting signs together. Get back to work!

I am really concerned that Aubertine's first shot out the door is a negative. What ever happend to "one of us?" Or how about "getting the job done?"

Darrel should stay on the issues. This class warfare thing is childish -- and voters can see right through it. He should fire the guy who came up with this aopproach -- especially right at the start of the campaign.

We don't need another campaign like last February!

Hmmm. Courtney M Ruddy, of the Salmon River Estate Ruddys, leading the negative attacks on our hometown boy?

Tsk. Tsk.

Oh, Lovey, come see what our boy is up to!

The Ruddys are a big family down in Oswego County -- and have lots of cousins in Jefferson, like Monseignor Ruddy. But they are anything but wealthy. They are all teachers and construction workers -- Very working class.

I know them all, and if the Ruddys have money it is news to me. Good people. I worked construction with his brother. His dad taught history at JCC and Fort Drum for a while, as an adjunct.

I think the reason some people may claim they have money is because the grandmother owns a big old farmhouse with some land not too far from the water. But the house is practically falling down. They are not rich. But they are good people, and known pretty well in Oswego. Careful what you say about them.

Last time I checked most teachers start, at least in the CCSD, with a salary of at least $35,000. How can you tell me that someone that has a starting salary like that; vacation time, health insurance and other benefits, PLUS a seemingly permenat job if they receive tenure, even if they are a terrible teacher; is part of the work to the bone working class American??? NYSUT has absolute control over Albany and it costs tax payers billions. They also have us stupified into thinking that teachers are poor public servants when in reality that is completely misleading.

I don't care who the Ruddy's relatives are even if it is the Pope. I don't care how much money the Ruddy's have or don't have. I don't care where they live, who they know or how popular they are. If he runs a negative campaign than Darrel Aubertine will lose my vote that I have given to him in the past. I agree with IV not again please.

OK, I realize that this blog isn't targeting teachers, but I took offence to Anon #10's post. I am a teacher and I am HARDLY "well off". I still have loans to pay off and expenses that are a part of daily life. I do have summers off, but I, along with several of my coworkers, have a second job over the summer. I consider myself very much a part of the working class! My job is by no means easy. I work my a** off. That said, I will vote for Darrel once again, because of the work he does not only for teachers, but for everyone in his district. Jim Wright was our senator for way too long. I don't remember our area being some sort of eutopia that some others remember while he was in office. Darrel hasn't been in long enough to undo the damage that years of Republican "representation" created. I feel that if the Republicans get the seat back, it will be devastating to our area.

Right, relatives are off-limits. But how much did the Ruddy's make from charging "admission" to their stretch of the river?

In MODERN everyday American English, "Esq" is a title given to lawyers. Hardly a gentlemanly crowd.

There are too many lawyers in Albany, why would we want one more?

Has anyone read this report as it relates to the NYS Senate?

http://www.citizenactionny.org/press/latestnews/Report%20on%20Health%20Ins%20Premiums%20and%20Lobbyists%20FINAL.pdf

Be sure to read the Methodology.

The facts are interesting.

Looking forward to the counterpoints.

I think this vilification of staff is about as absurd as it gets here, IV. You think Renzi doesn't have staff or advisors to be blogged about. Chris McKenna, top dollar GOP hack? Or Renzi media advisor Scott Howell, a Rove student how is known for nasty ads. C'mon, IV, get out of the gutter.

If you deliberately misstate the facts in attacking your opponent, isn't that negative.

What's more negative then when Dave says Darrel's plan would gut STAR and that Darrel doesn't support the property tax cap.

I read that release on newswatch50's site. That's not negative. Dave's negative and that release set the record straight.

I'm voting for Aubertine. Lower taxes and a real work ethic to bring in jobs is what I want and Dave Renzi is selling himself as nothing but a yeller and screaming lawyer.

Dave Renzi, "Results not excuses"... Funny what has he ever accomplished as a public servant to show he can get results? Oh thats right, nothing!
So lets attack Aubertine, and say he is being negative. IV, you are a true joker, keep it up, its funny.

I think that staff are fair game when they get involved in the mud slinging and personal smears that Aubertine's boy Cort used in Oswego COunty last year in the River Ad fiasco. Cort shoul well know and remember that the "other side" pulled a few punches back......it never was outed who spent the whole evening with the famed fisherman from the river ad after the left the Pulaski bar on that cold February night.....
The fisherman got the DWI, but the girl with him was id'd by cops but not bloggers or media otherwise....

Since our Senator can't read legislation and doesn't know how to get bills passed, maybe Albany DOES need at least one more lawyer.
