STAR Rebate - Buh Bye!

Among the many ways that you will pay for the Democrats desire to spend money that New Yorkers do not have, there is one way in which you will lose money also.

STAR rebate -- The budget eliminates STAR rebates that were worth hundreds of dollars to many homeowners. Seniors got 40% more than non-seniors. Effectively, our Senator has voted to raise your property taxes by taking away your property tax rebate

This link takes you to a website that allows you to see the actual value of your 2008 STAR rebate check. For instance, a senior citizen couple in Sandy Creek on a fixed income of less than $90,000 will lose more than $400 in their rebate!!

Be sure to drop a note and thank Senator Aubertine Aubertine@senate.state.ny.us

That's $400 MORE that I pay in taxes. Nice work, Malcolm, Shelly, Darrel, Addie and Gov. Paterson!

But then again, I own my home, so these guys must think I'm "rich!"

Anonymous said...

What is even worse is the fact that they took away the STAR Rebate money and didn't even use those millions to reduce our property taxes.

Aubertine is clearly unable to buck his party. What a joke.

To read a BS piece from him on Bipartison efforts is an insult to those of us who pay attention to whats going on in Albany.

Do us a favor Darrel RESIGN. We were better represented by an empty seat.

Anonymous said...

Didn't Aubertine campaign on a plan to end the STAR rebate?

He's always been opposed to STAR. Guess he doesn't think we opay enough in taxes.

They used it to lie about limitiing property taxes. The school slobs then continued spending, and now we lose our only means of paying the bill. Bait and switch.

I'll bet the teachers will agree to cut spending now that the STAR has been eliminated.

It was just a lie to allow them to increase spending in the first place.

Well Darrel just showed how much he is fighting for us by voting yes on the education bill. Sweeping hundreds of millions of dollars from college students. Removing our star rebate which increases everyone school tax between $200-$500. Way to represent US Darrel.

all I read here is negative comments. Why doesn't someone suggest something positive? The Reps had a hundred years of rule in NY, and almost 50 in the US, so what's the beef?

Well now, I enjoyed the STAR rebates too, but if you really want lower property taxes complain to your county, town, and school boards. They need to start dealing with reality. They've been let off the hook by the STAR rebates. The rebates hid the real cost of local government and at the same time increased state spending. Look locally for solutions...you'll find the local town boards are as bad as Albany.

Yes, TF

In a less than a single year the democrats have erased all thoughts about the past with an atrocious budget, both state and federal.

Don't get righteous on us now that you are responsible for this mess.

Just my view and I expect plenty of flak on my statement, but here goes ...

IV posted this about the STAR program, in part:

"For instance, a senior citizen couple in Sandy Creek on a fixed income of less than $90,000 will lose more than $400 in their rebate!!"

I say a senior citizen living on $89,999.99 (just below your $90,000 example) can afford to lose $400 a year ... if it were to help the state overall get out of this economic tar pit ...

It is getting more and more painfully clear to me that with the rabid and rapid attacks on the DEMS (and many times they deserve some attacks, too), is that that GOP around here will not be happy or content unless they, and only they, are in control.

But, doesn't that kinda take away from anyone who voted for a DEM, like Aubertine or Addie that maybe was NOT Democrat?

I thought so.

I believe what TF is trying to say is that Dems did not create this problem. It was a problem created by both Dems and Reps and Dems just so happen to be in power currently and are charged with the difficult task of trying to solve a $17 billion budget gap. Many of these decisions will be unpopular, but necessary. So just give them a chance because none of us are economists and most of us do not even understand the budget, we just read what the newspapers write, and chances are the newspapers are getting their filtered information directly from the politicians who are mounting these attacks. Just like we did not get ourselves into this hole over night, we are not going to dig ourselves out of it over night. Please support your representatives in these tough times and give it a year or two to start showing results, and then, if nothing has changed bitch all you want, I know I will.

BS! If they were attempting to solve the problem then they would cut spending and people would then be wrong to complain.

They are making the problem worse by spending to much. Do not be blinded, Silver is taking all he can from NYS taxpayers and Darrel or any other Democrat could single handily stop this by voting NO.

Do not believe what the media is saying, but just look at what the Democrat Comptroller is saying.

They did cut spending. The increase in spending comes from the stimulus money which we would have lost if we did not spend it in this years budget. The stimulus money is included in the budget for infrastructure improvments and job creation. They cut from almost every area of the budget. Please look into your facts before you rant.

Lets not all forget Joe Bruno's budget last year which spent more than both the Governors and Assembly's budget in order to appease his special interests to help hold onto the majority, which he still ended up loosing. It was not the Dems who got us into this crisis. It was every crooked politician who succumbs to the pressures of special interests in order to solicit campaign contributions. If the Rep's held onto power in the Senate, they would be putting forth the same budget and taking a beating for it, they are just able to attack the budget because they are not the party in power.

1:21 - Wrong!

READ COMPTROLLER REPORT

They are using one shot revenue - STIMULUS for increased recurring expenses (spending).

The Governor's proposal did not even cut spending, so do not say the legislature's budget cuts spending. Do not peddle that crap.

Lets also remember that Dinapoli is running for reelection in 2010 and its in his best interest to slam an unpopular budget.

i think anon 12:37 makes some good points, but i think the "wait and see" attitude is ultimately far too much of a dodge. i'm certainly no economist either, but that's no reason not to try to stay informed on the issues and form opinions about them; the alternative cedes far too much deference to the experts. i think we all understand that nys, like everywhere else in the country, is facing severe economic hardship, and some awfully difficult budget choices had to be made. but -- and i really do hope i'm wrong -- this budget just looks like a stinker! how do you justify the abominable process by which it came about? how do you justify the enormous tax and spending increases?

bruce krug said...

Take a look at the ammendments offered by the Republicans. More spending on top of more spending. Then they complain about the budget as it is?
The Grand Obstructionist Party left a mess at the state level at the same time they were wrecking the national economy... and now they have the answers?
There's plenty not to like everywhere you look when talking about government policies, but there'e no easy way out of this. Nobody wants there pet oxen gored either by spending cuts or by increased taxes and that is why making legislation is compared to making sausage. The GOPers sausage is from yesterday's meat and it wasn't good then. Time for a new recipe.

Kermit and Krug are right. On this post, they are right. Much as I'm tired of both of them.

This budget stinks. And as Kerm says, the process is dishonest.

And Krug is right to point out that the Reps only suggestions involve MORE SPENDING. How does that help us. If that is their only input, then they deserve to be left out of the process.

This is the nutcase who attacks these guys all the time. And this is the guy who thinks Silver should be in jail for what his is doing to our kids. But these two are absolutely right.

Frog and Krug. Sounds like a pub.

As far as TF.

All I can say is this, TF.

9%. Is this what you think we should do at a time like this? Raise spending 9%?

If you do...
enough said right there.

As I suspected and warned. Teachers did get their increase in funding.

According to Aubertine in today's news.

Funding. I love that word.

3:59 -- Thanks for the quotes you couldn't use in Darrel's release. very enlightening.

But stick to the facts. The Republicans are just trying to force debate on a plan that was hatched in complete secrecy and force Democrats to defend some of the dumb decisions you made -- like eliminating the STAR rebate (raising everyone's property taxes in the bargain) and hiking taxes and spending by record amounts.

Watch just a few minutes of the still-ongoing debate and you see Democrats floundering for answers -- because rank-and-file D's don't know what's in the budget either!

It would take just one with a little courage to stand up to Shelly Silver and David Paterson and say "NO" to send this whole wrecking ball of a budget back to the drawing board -- and this time invite the public in for a look.

I think the Reps took such a butt-kicking nationwide in November, they should be vewy vewy quiet until the 2010 elections. The people have spoken. LOL!!

STAR is great politics, but what is its rationale other than bribing voters with their own money.......

Anonymous said...

Right -- it's MY money.

Did Sen. Aubertine ask me if he could take it back?

C'mon over to " The Frog and Krug" and drink the Kool-Aid.

It's true that STAR was politics. So what is your point?

It was a break that many folks needed to help pay the bill for the teacher union. It was supposedly a transfer of burden to the state from local districts, end result being continued spending. Which is what the education bums wanted. Now, they drop the program after years of raising the spending.

Actually, it's kind of funny in a way. No limits on spending always leads to a screwing. And now, dear stupid folks, enjoy the result. Congrats to the teachers, eh Wiley?

Hey Bruce, This mess was left by the Republican Senate and the Democrat Assembly.

Lets not forget that the Dems had control of the House, and the senate in for how many years under Bush. Wake up. Its power hungry politicians that made this mess, and you buddy Aubertine is as bad as any.

What I find funny is that Jefferson Democrat, Rwiley, and DuhBrinker are all quiet on the budget. Even they can't believe what their party is doing to NY

7:37 is right. This state budget is George Bush's fault. Or is it Ronald Reagan's? This guy is yet another reason to wear your seatbelt and watch over your kids.
Amazing thought process.

see a Dem majority anywhere?

From 1994 until 2006 we had a Republican Governor, a Republican Senate and a Democrat Assembly. From 2000 until 2006 we had a Republican President, a Republican House of Represnetatives and a Republican Senate. Even under Clinton we had a Republican Congress for nost of his two terms.
Now we have an economic catastrophy and it's up to the Democrats to clean it up. As I said before, there is plenty to complain about and it should have been done openly, but who has the alternative. The Republicans have only proposed to spend more money. This budget was destined to be ugly because of the crisis we're in.

I don't understand how NNyers expect Patterson to turn a manure pile(the economic situation) into a bed of roses, unless he is David Copperfield. And I agree w/ BK's post.

I would like to remind my readers that Einstein said -the thinking that got us into this mess isn't the thinking that'll get us out.
1. there are only so many ways to raise $$ if you're the gov't

2. those old John Deere calendar pictures are history now for most modern farmers

3. people squeal about "free markets," but show me one.

4. the re-election rate for the US house avereged 97% in the last 20 years. About 85% for the US senate.

5. Only 30 of the 202 incumbents seeking reelection in the New York state Legislature faced major-party primary challenges last week, and 27 of them won. Come November, 51 members of the Legislature, or almost a quarter, will face no opponent from a major party, meaning that on Election Day millions of New Yorkers will find little option other than the incumbent on the ballot.

6. too many workers are paid based on longevity rather than performance.

7. we send our representatives to Albany (or Wash.) to bring home the bacon, then we complain about pork and earmarks when somebody else gets some.

8. if you want your taxes lowered, don't run to the gov't for handouts.

9. I sat at the stoplight in Limerick one weekday recently, and counted 87 personal vehicles with one occupant in one 30 minute period.

10 show me two energy-efficient houses built or under construction recently.

11. if you want to get something done, get involved in a special-interest group, (STOPNYRI is a good example), or volunteer at HGS or somewhere. See the syatem in action.

12. people who never have time to exercise always find time to eat!
