Paterson's Cafeteria Axe

Governor David Paterson has produced a list of cuts and asking legislators to pick their poison cafeteria style.

$506 million in Medicaid
(This will have SEIU and hospitals howling)

$250 million aid to local governments, 6% which is $250 million this year and $420 next year.
(This will have local governments threatening property tax increases, while they should be looking for cuts themselves)

$232 million reduction in pork, which is a 50% reduction in member item money and a postponing of legislative programs.
(This will have good government folks cheering, while special pet project recipient crying)

$50 million from CUNY

Together these total over $1 billion in potential cuts, which Paterson wants the end result in cuts to come in around $600 million.

These cuts are in addition to his agency cuts of 7% that were already ordered, which is expected to produce $630 million in savings.

This is nothing. If Paterson were serious he'd cut $25 billion off the top just to start with.
