Powell Endorsed Obama

you know, i thought colin powell gave a very reasoned, sensible, and articulate case for why he chose to support obama over mccain. but apparently iv is happy to just dismiss all of that as "kool-aid". tell me iv, exactly what part of powell's rationale do you disagree with?

I'm suprised and disappointed that Powell would do this. I realize he has been promised a high level position, but that doesn't take away what I view is an important endorsement. $150 million in one month of fund raising, media bias, hollywood, youth vote, the timing of the bank crisis, all point to an Obama presidency. We've been heading towards this for a long time. People have given up, and they love government. It's not a problem to me, as I near retirement. But I fear for what socialism means for our youth.

Congratulations on your retirement !

I am retired too. I am lucky to receive some social security.

I am fortunate to have a pension and annuities, too, and health insurance.

These are all the dreaded "social programs" that you are afraid might be imposed upon our youth.

Or, may I assume that your are so loaded with cash and securities that you are going to refuse all social benefits. Lucky you, but:

Hell, John McCain even cashes in on the very same Social Security program he claims is broken.

In 2007, he received benefits of $23,157 from Social Security, approximately $1,930 a month. The maximum monthly benefit under Social Security is $2,185. Social Security benefits are determined by age at retirement.

McCain, who is 71, has received benefits since he was 65.

Big news for military where Obama support has spread faster than sand in an Iraqi windstorm.
Thanks, General Powell.

here's what a commenter over at john cole's blog had to say about the right wing's latest meme that obama is a "socialist":

Socialist: raising the top tax rate from 35% to 39%.

Free-Market: nationalizing the banks, massive investment in insurance agencies, limiting certain types of trades, raising the debt ceiling, and promoting government investment into stocks and bonds. And an emphasis on Red States.

It’s all so clear now!

Also, I found it fascinating that John McCain, who refused to vote for the GI Bill for our troops because "it's too generous," is himself getting $58,000 a year, tax-free, from the US government for his military service for 100% disability. If McCain has been getting that amount every year since Vietnam, that would total $2,000,000 for the man who isn't into overgenerous government. This is another one of those Government programs where taxes are collected from every body so they can help a few. It is called socialism.

Point #1:
If you had watched the whole interview (if you even watched it at all....), you would know that Gen. Powell is not interested in serving again in an official capacity. He was actually quite clear on that.

And I quote:

MR. BROKAW: Finally, if Senator Obama is elected president, will there be a place for Colin Powell in that administration? Maybe as the ambassador at large in Africa or to take on the daunting task of resolving the Israeli/Palestinian issue?

GEN. POWELL: I served 40 years in government, and I--I'm not looking forward to a position or an assignment. Of course, I have always said if a president asks you to do something, you have to consider it. But I am in no way interested in returning to government. But I, of course, would sit and talk to any president who wishes to talk to me.

MR. BROKAW: You're not ruling it out?

GEN. POWELL: I would sit and talk to any president who wishes to talk to me, but I'm not anxious to rule it in.

MR. BROKAW: General Colin Powell, thank you very much for being with us this morning. Appreciate it.

GEN. POWELL: Thank you, Tom.

Point #2:
As rwiley already touched on, this country is based on the principles of both capitalism AND socialism already--without any current or future influence from Barack Obama. What in the world to you view the "bailout" as?

To define (compliments of wiki):
Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating state [meaning government-STA] or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and the creation of an egalitarian society.[1][...]

Socialists mainly share the belief that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital, and creates an unequal society. All socialists advocate the creation of an egalitarian society, in which wealth and power are distributed more evenly, although there is considerable disagreement among socialists over how, and to what extent this could be achieved.[1]

Here's the deal on POWELL:

Here's the deal with POWELL and his UN speech.

· We all know POWELL said his notes, prepared by Cheney, Libby and others, was, in POWELL's words, "Bullshit and I'm not going to say that."

· We know the remarks were revised and POWELL made the UN speech, and we went to war.

* POWELL resigned in Nov 2004.

POWELL should have resigned the moment he saw the notes were bullshit - why?

· If you can't figure that out, I'm here to help you - just ask!

And, now OBAMA wants to make POWELL one of his ADVISORS?

Advise on what? Conducting and displayikgn piss-poor judgment, lying us into another war, serving under two Bushes?

Kool Aid - yes; but GOP kool aid; the Red kind.

Wiley, it's not that I don't want young people to have the advantages I've had. We both want them to. The problem is socialism is inefficient. It encourages people to NOT work. It takes money from people who DO, and rewards bad decisions, behaviours, choices. I'm afraid that our move towards socialism will provide our youth with much less than you and I have been able to enjoy. We've already seen things start to get harder for our young people, especially here in NY. We both want what is best, we just have different ways of getting there. I have NO faith in government. I have much more faith in the freedom of the individual. You have a good evening, Wileydude.

" I have NO faith in government"

Then, wiley was right.

You are sending back you SS. A real American.

General Powell has always been a 'real' American MAN with guts and integrity. Why are all the slithering yellow bellies (like Rush) upset that he based his endorsement of Obama on facts and reasoning, instead of blindly following his party over a cliff.

Powell the smartest Lemming in the GOP.

Despite some rumors, the Ku Klux Klan is not endorsing Barack Obama for President. In fact, Thomas Robb, national director of The Knights Party says his organization has serious questions it would like Barack to answer. Said Robb, "Is he willing to stand for the protection of white men, women and children who are quickly to be America’s new minority. Just over two years ago, the Brookings Institution in Washington D.C. stated that white children under the age of five were counted for less than 50% of the population. I do not feel it is an exaggeration to be very concerned about America’s future." Where does Barrack Obama’s allegiance lie? And what about Hillary Clinton or John McCain? Will they voice concern for the sons and daughters of the Republic? The United States of America is a great nation! How great will we be should a traitor take office as President? Is America headed down a dangerous path? We believe so. While we do not take an official position toward any candidate, we feel that we represent the opinion of many dissatisfied people throughout the country who worry for the future of their children. Will anyone, be it Republican or Democrat, stand up and voice their support for white Christian.

"socialism is inefficient"-stated as we watch unfettered, unregulated, capitalism nuke our economy. It sure seems "efficient" at transferring wealth to the wealthiest 1% in our country.

Bruce, we have the best standard of living in the world, in what I believe is the greatest country in the world, with the greatest freedoms in the world. I'm not sure what you're point is. Are we perfect? No. Have you memorized a bunch of liberal blather? I'd submit that you have. There is nothing "unfettered and unregulated" around here, Bruce. That must be Lewis County you're talking about.
